Wouldn't SD be able to hit pindi's stack rn with chucklenaughts + cats and do some significant damage, such that pindi would barely be able to take the city with his second stack? Now, if he only had some horsearchers left over, he could then flank the cats out of existence.
Defending against collateral is always a losing proposition, at least until late-late game.

Curious how fast pindicator can get through SD's land now. Judging by SD's last screenshot, that was almost literally his entire army.

I'd have taken the edu bulb, liberalism, and chosen rep parts, if I were jowy - 100% a mistake.
Edu makes GP cheaper, and lib is cheaper than rep parts.

Yeah agreed. Academy at this stage of the game seems a little crazy. It's worth 45bpt at max science, and I think his break-even is... 70% at best? So let's charitably call it worth 30bpt. That would take way too long to pay for itself, and that's only counting raw beakers and not accounting for the benefits you've mentioned (plus Liberalism denial).

On the other side of the equation: 1 GS doesn't finish education and Jowy's estimate is that he can't beat Mjmd to Lib. If he is correct that he can't beat Mjmd to Lib then bulbing Education is a bad play when he's beelining Rifling. I don't know what his GP generation is like so I don't know if saving the GS for a golden age is worthwihle.
He's looking at 9 turns of teching at 100% to get to Rifling pre-academy. Roughly 400 beakers? So the academy is likely worth 1 turn earlier Rifling plus downstream tech benefits.
It doesn't look like a great choice but it may have been his least bad option under the circumstances.

Looking at Charriu's last post.....I think Jowy will find Gunpowder more useful than University.

Looking more closely at Mjmd's thread, Jowy is probably correct that he can't beat him there even with the bulb. So that probably makes it a more defensible choice. That said, I'd need proof that it actually speeds him by a turn, because it only represents a ~7% increase in his 100% tech rate. I don't know what his great person and golden age counts look like to know if that's a valid option or not.

Charriu just managed to put Jowy on the right path despite Jowy's builder instincts.
This is a really, really fascinating game. Four legitimate contenders right now; I know everyone is rooting for Pindicator because of sheer reporting gold, and once he topples Superdeath he's going to be in an excellent long-term position...but with drafted rifles incoming from the people without wrecked economies, I don't know if he makes it long term. His road to a humming and productive economic engine is long and chaotic, and although muskets and caravels can stop rifles and galleons, the killer apps of cavalry and cannon aren't all that far away. And that's not even considering the horror that is Combustion, which Jowy can hit centuries ahead of poor Pindicator.

Is Mr. Cairo really a competitor? It's hard to tell with the sparse reporting, but he's not rampaging his way through AT yet, nor is a major tech leader like Jowy. He does have the most interesting position, as he has landbridges to attack all the other southern players after he's done with AT, and should be able to exert control over all the inner seas.
Maybe I'll prod him for pictures
