[NO PLAYERS] The WW46 Lurker Thread

Yeah, I am all for throwing out inventive ideas into the discussion. That is just one that I don't like.

I'm very perplexed by the way these games flow here.

I'm with Bob that analyzing endless pages of posts based on no real information to pick up a wolf tell is a lot to ask.  Especially since there are so many people already trying to do that.  People have indeed slipped up in the past, but if I was playing and felt forced to try to make up a reason to vote for someone based on all that I would not be playing honestly and likely to be called out.

And while I don't consider myself particularly good at reading people, Bob did come off either as a villager, or as someone who had completely checked out.  He said he didn't have a role to claim.  Wolf Bob probably would have at least moved his own vote around, or probably faked a claim.

I will follow along and will be curious if it actually took much in the way of wolf activity to get Bob lynched. I suspect not, in which case I won't go so far as to say that it is bad play, but at least it's counter to the premise that you can make useful reads on day 1?

I admit that I'm saying this with the benefit of hindsight, so take it with a grain of salt.

Being a wolf is pretty fun!  Wolves generally come in three varieties:

* Constant poster who spams voluminous "analysis" of dubious value; as I noted in one of my posts in the game thread, this strategy has numerous advantages for a player able to invest the time in it, including convincing weak villagers to keep them around as a crutch and, from a meta perspective, making their posting history a chore to sort through.  I believe Lewwyn may be one in this game.

* Minimal poster who coasts through the game as long as possible by being as forgettable as practical, never doing anything overtly controversial and providing minimal content.  Village appears to have suspected I was one; within this game I think Commodore fits the bill (I actually forgot he was playing for the first half of Day 1)

* Hybrid approach of posting at an average-to-infrequent level, but making sure every post is as detailed, well-written, persuasive, and seemingly helpful as possible.  Much easier to pull off if there's a third scum faction you can tear into without resorting to artifice. My favored strategy as scum, but it can suck you into potentially perilous debates.  Quite a few players could fit the bill for this game- maybe Serdoa's one?

Any of the above can be combined with busing a fellow scum for credit, which will almost certainly be arranged in advance in the secret scum forum unless their team is populated by incompetents or players with massively divergent timezones.  You'll just about never see a scum team made entirely of one variety or other; it's actively detrimental for instance for every wolf to be highly active, as that forces them to engage with each other constantly, which is difficult to maintain over an extended period of time without appearing suspicious.

Bob, what would be your preferred strategy for Day 1?

Forgive me if this is over-simplifying, but at least from reading your critics in thread it seems like without having to do detailed re-reads of 400 posts, one could still write a few 1-paragraph summaries of actions or players they found suspicious. Even if that doesn’t amount to much it would seemingly at least answer the critics. My impression is for whatever reason you, Cyneheard, and SD all actively avoided doing that.

That definitely would have been a better strategy for staying alive; I wasn't actively avoiding doing so intentionally, I was simply satisfied with my vote and didn't see any reason to change it, and I didn't have a great read on anyone in particular. A lack of commitment (or laziness, take your pick) surely played a role as well.

El Grillo probably hid behind Cyneheard. Unlucky.

A 3 death night to start things off. There are moving parts here that aren't evident, and might not be til end of the game.

I fully expect to earn some anger because that's all I am used to while running games, but forward we move.

Welcome to Gaspar, El Grillo, and Cyneheard.

Yep, hid behind Cyneheard. I was hoping he was in the same camp as Bob in terms of just feeling irritated, and wanted to be able to argue in his favor if he was pushed today. I left a very obvious hint in that he was the last person I mentioned during the day, since apparently RB doesn’t like more elaborate breadcrumbs.

On the one hand, definitely sad I’m dead, having a pretty strong role would’ve been fun. On the other, you know, maybe one day of Mafia was enough to scratch the itch for now smile

Big reveal. A day 1 near-lynch for a wolf is bound to leave a lot of clues that could lead the village quickly to victory.
