I had assumed before the game that maintenance costs don't exist on Monarch. Apparently, I was wrong.
Expenses:
I may have built too many units. I'm not sure how threatening the financial situation is. Writing will likely be done turn 70. We need to get to Currency and Iron Working in somewhat reasonable time. Another river gold mine will come online turn 73 and we have 5 river cottages done some of which will grow in the next 5 turns. So maybe worrying about this is premature.
The key question is if and how much expansion needs to be slowed. I will read up on maintenance and unit cost and try to make a spreadsheet which allows prediction. Do we know the exact map dimensions?
Possible measures to improve the economy in order of ugliness:
Get circumnagivation. (Would be swell but can't be guaranteed. Not likely in the next 10 turns.)
Build Stonhenge in Legerity. (Failure cases: noone wants it, someone wants it too early.)
Raze the barb city near Amicalola. (Axe is on its way.)
Whip libraries in Tombola, Soubrette, Grimoire and hire some scientists. (This will hurt finances for a few turns and slow expansion.)
Go to Currency via Alphabet. (Everyone is gonna know what we are doing for the rest of the game.

)
Disconnect copper and overflow whip warriors. (About 20 gold per whip at best, lots of whip anger, more unit costs.)
Hatch a GS and start a GA. (

The smilie collection on these boards is decidedly lacking.
