Is that character a variant? (I just love getting asked that in channel.) - Charis

[spoiler] Civac fixes it (again)

I took a swing at one barb warrior on the forested hill. Not sure that was a good idea. Axe is at 2.9/5 now. The other warrior killed Gavagai's scout and is at 1.7/2. If it promotes to combat 1 and heals it will have 4% odds or so.

How do I use autopromote? Will it trigger before barb movement?

You just activate the toggle in the option menu. You can do that in-game too.

Gavagai accepted Open Borders.

I ferried the capital's MP warrior over to the island to scout it a bit. It will be returned in a few turns.

The work boat was meant to scout the coast towards Amicalola. But for the time being the islands are more interesting. I whipped a settler in Quaesitum this turn. It will found city #8 on the island in three turns.

AT pushed his warrior on the plains hill east of its current position last turn but retreated when he saw the spear return just in time.

At the other western city I returned to my cowardly ways and refused to attack the warrior at 98%.

It may pillage the road at some point. But there will be an axe coming from the capital.

Another work boat initially meant for the coast line scouts the southern island.

The alternative positon of Andragogy 1SE would have orphaned the fish we didn't see earlier.

Our island city will be 1 turn late because I can't remember to load a galley before sending it on its way. rolleye This hurts a bit we are at 20% effective research rate, +9 gold at 0% research. I have been agonizing on where to put the next settler. All possible city locations start horribly slow. Fortunately:

The island is apparently the land of milk and honey. Next settler goes to the Pigs. (Wheat/Gold spot is the one with the misplaced settler.)

Would you put a cities on either of these spots? They are both 9 tiles from Amicalola's capital and 8 tiles from ours. I don't want to annoy him too.

We met Lewwyn in the far east:

International news:
Gavagai does not appear to have trade routes to us either.  noidea
Commodore proved that the world is round.
AT founded his 6th city.
Judaism was founded.

I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

Circumnav gives you +1 trade route in coastal cities in this mod. It is available to everyone.

The barb warrior at Legerity finally had the grace to kill himself by charging our axeman. He could have pillaged a hill road too, so that was fortunate.

I'm strongly considering building Stonehenge in Legerity. There a bunch of future plants which really could use an early culture expansion and the religion thing didn't work out (in retrospect going for that was likely a mistake). If we get Stonehenge that really helps and if we don't get it that's even better provided there are some decent hammers in it already.

Economy is hurting pretty badly. However, the gold mine came online and doubled our savings rate by itself. FIN river gold is 9 commerce. crazyeye Island city will add another 7 base commerce via trade routes. It can also work another river gold mine in 10 turns or so. We are paying a quite a bit of unit maintenance and upkeep. I hope with the island cities being founded those will come down.

We founded the first island city. Second one is founded next turn.

With oversea trade routes established we are back to around 30% research rate. We are significantly behind on GNP regardless. (See discussion in follow up post.)

The situation at the western border:

AT is about to settle his 8th city and barr the way of our scout. If he settles in place that is fine. If he goes to the plains hill next to the sheep and horses I strongly consider sending the 2 axes I have in the area to raze the city. What do you say Ruff?

I had assumed before the game that maintenance costs don't exist on Monarch. Apparently, I was wrong.

Expenses:

I may have built too many units. I'm not sure how threatening the financial situation is. Writing will likely be done turn 70. We need to get to Currency and Iron Working in somewhat reasonable time. Another river gold mine will come online turn 73 and we have 5 river cottages done some of which will grow in the next 5 turns. So maybe worrying about this is premature.
The key question is if and how much expansion needs to be slowed. I will read up on maintenance and unit cost and try to make a spreadsheet which allows prediction. Do we know the exact map dimensions?

Possible measures to improve the economy in order of ugliness:
Get circumnagivation. (Would be swell but can't be guaranteed. Not likely in the next 10 turns.)
Build Stonhenge in Legerity. (Failure cases: noone wants it, someone wants it too early.)
Raze the barb city near Amicalola. (Axe is on its way.)
Whip libraries in Tombola, Soubrette, Grimoire and hire some scientists. (This will hurt finances for a few turns and slow expansion.)
Go to Currency via Alphabet. (Everyone is gonna know what we are doing for the rest of the game. scared )
Disconnect copper and overflow whip warriors. (About 20 gold per whip at best, lots of whip anger, more unit costs.)
Hatch a GS and start a GA. ( dubious.gif )

The smilie collection on these boards is decidedly lacking. shakehead
