Reconfigured Bogota to finish the builder 1 turn before growth - this will allow me to mine the salt in time to avoid a penalty from going into negative amenities
![]() Thinking of moving the 3rd city 1E (where the settler is now), this will connect with Bogota's territory, so that I can swap tiles between the two cities, and also gives me an easy farm on the maize for Irrigation eureka. Bogota's borders aren't growing onto the wheat any time soon, and with no gold-producing tiles and no barb camps, gold is really bad for this point of the game - don't want to spend it on a wheat tile I wouldn't even work Feels like a slow start in general, but with good potential once it gets going
Finally noticed that eureka for Foreign Trade is to build a scout, not to discover a foreign continent. Much easier and more reliable to achieve (although of course in games BBG is typically used for, with ancient ruins and next to no barbs, this is free - scout first is the standard opening)
No rush - I'm still nowhere near the cash needed to buy a trader - so I'll start with a scout in the 2nd city to get this eureka Same old otherwise. Finished Pottery, went for Archery next, no need to Irrigation right away, as it will be a while before I get another builder ![]()
Your middle city might be better NW. It will.have a 2/2 tile to work and salt first ring and still having your irrigation eureka.
I don't like putting it further north because of how many bare plains there are. The current placement allows it to share tiles with Bogota, which has enough good tiles to spare, and horses/sheep/salt are all in range
Eastern land is better quality, but likely backline, that's why I'm focusing on west first. The warrior is on the way to check if there's any competition to the southeast

Settler finally arrives at the planned 2nd city spot ![]() Meanwhile the warrior has been poking around the area, staying close enough to protect the settler, but also uncovering additional tiles. What it revealed is cocoa, the 4th and last luxury of my starting continent I considered delaying the city by yet another turn to move 1W, so that cocoa is in 2nd ring rather than 3rd. Costly, cosnidering I would also lose a fair few good 1st ring tiles. Then I checked the settler lense ![]() There's red! There's someone out there! Not surprising really, I expected this area to be contested. With how far from my capital the planned spot is, I don't want to go even farther away, and do want this city to get started as fast as possible. So I'm staying where I am, and taking advantage of this first ring, which is very very good by early game standards. Will worry about acquiring cocoa later
Gosh, you have some absolutely gorgeous tropical terrain there.
