Is that character a variant? (I just love getting asked that in channel.) - Charis

[SPOILERS] New setting, same RNG. yuris125, Civ6 PBEM26

Pindicator didn't accept friendship. Somewhat surprised, but his choice. I mostly didn't want him to panic as my power rating went up from the two horsemen

City 6 settled

Ended up buying the banana tile for it, I prefer to work 3/1 tile over 2/2 early on, and it was at risk of being claimed by Geneva

Finally realised the government plaza and its buildings are going to give me governor titles as well, so I should get Magnus in Caracas in time for Etemenanki chops, and need to start thinking what I want to do with governors after that

Contact with Archduke

As expected, his power rating is through the roof. Annoyingly, he's still perfectly fine economically - although not surprising when he's on 7 cities, and the ones he captured from Russia are probably better developed than my freshly settled ones. Somewhat surprising is that he's running Classical Republic and not Oligarchy. Does this mean he's not planning another war in the near future? Or just doesn't need military policies and extra combat strength to wage it?

Also noteworthy from this screenshot, terrain between Aztec and me is quite a chokepoint, with almost all the passable tiles blocked by Geneva. It should be fairly easy for me to keep a scout in the area and be aware of any threat - at least until navies come into play

I do need to get a couple more scouts out and explore some more. I'm actually getting slightly worried about era score, I need 10 more points to avoid a dark age, 5 will come from districts, but I'm not yet sure where the other 5 are coming from

Regarding governot titles. I'm about to get two, one from DefTactics and one from completing Governor Plaza. These are spoken for, one for Liang's Zoning Commisioner promotion for instant +7 hpt in Bogota, the other to recruit Magnus. I will get another two in the near future, from Recorded History civic and from Ancestral Hall. What would I do with them?

Amani is probably out, I don't see any benefit from claiming suzerainty over a known city state, and I would struggle to maintain it if someone decided to compete for it

I also don't think I need Victor if there's no immediate military plans

Promoting Magnus doesn't seem to offer much

The left side isn't bad, but beenfits are fairly small. Right side is not useful at all - settlers are going to be produced in the capital, where I will have +50% to their production from Ancestral Hall, and I'm not moving Liang out of there, and IZ bonuses are not in play yet. Also, I think I want a third governor, in case I need one for loyalty reasons

Reina is the next one who isn't really useful

Foreign trade routes aren't really a thing in MP, sending a trade route to another civ is usually a sign of building a road towards them with aggressive intentions. I do have one incoming city state route which I think would count, but that's just +4gpt. Forestry Management could be useful maybe? but will fall off relatively quickly, as the number of unimproved down will go down dramatically post-Feudalism. And Harbomaster is completely useless when I don't have any coastal cities. Tax Collector is alright, but way too far away

Pingala feels like someone I will definitely want later, but not yet

He will be good once I have cities with developed campuses. But for now I think I'm alright on science, even if my bpt is a bit lagging behind Pindicator and Archduke. Think I will get him with medieval era titles

So to my surprise, I think Moksha is the pick

I tend to ignore him as he seems to be faith-focused, and I usually don't use faith, especially in SP where AI tends to be annoying with their religions. But he also generates culture - and I more culture is something I do want. Both his starting ability and Connoisser promotion are going to be useful on the way to Feudalism. So I think that's what I'm doing

DefTactics comes in, and I buy a tile at Caracas before switching policies

I ended up buying the 1/3 forest tile. Firstly, the city has enough food to work it over a 2/2. Secondly, it is another forest to chop into the wonder, which is better than a jungle. It would also be very low priority for tile picker, so better to spend money on it if I want it

Unfortunately, the wonder will be too slow to boost Drama and Poetry. But on the plus side, means I can wait with the wonder-production-boosting card

Ended up just switching Land Surveyors back to Caravansarais this round. Kept the policy which boosts horseman production - as much as I want to finish a market in Quito, between Archduke's sky-high military rating and Pindicator rejecting my friendship, feel I need more military

Also pictured, Bogota's tile yields after Liang's promotion. Aren't they beautiful

Civ6 is frustrating sometimes. As seen from the previous screenshot, I expected to finish Monument in Quito. Except a trade route completed, and it decided to reshuffle the tiles I was working to compensate for the lost food, resulting in me coming up a couple hammers short

Really need to remember to keep locks on tiles I'm working

Going to build a horseman in Bogota instead, will only take 2 turns there, probably a better place to do it anyway

Question. I'm thinking about taking Hattusa out now, before it builds walls - pretty sure I can do it with 3 horsemen. This will give Pindicator 50 grievances against me, as he has 2 envoys. Do grievances matter in MP at all?

They affect war weariness in some arcane fashion, which in turn affects amenities and therefore yields, but overall the impact is pretty marginal.
I Think I'm Gwangju Like It Here

Cool, tyty. Reasons I want to take Hattusa now:

* I want some XP for my horsemen, and the usual source of early XP, the barbs, have been MIA this game
* Pindicator has two envoys there, so if there are hostilities between us, there's always danger of him sending a third one, claiming suzerainty, and forcing my units to split off to deal with their units. I do not think Pindicator is planning anything aggressive at present, his power continues to be low (perhaps dangerously so with Archduke around), but have to be mindful of the danger
* A size 5 city with a campus would just be a good addition to my empire - certainly more benficial than a city state which possibly maybe could be useful down the line

Policy switch on finishing Drama and Poetry

Colonisation as I'm about to build Ancestral Hall in Bogota and will want to focus on settlers there. Corvee to help with Etiminanki, and hopefully Coliseum, although an arena, which is required for it, is still some distance away

Then I went to pick the next civic, and saw Feudalism on the list already. For some reason I was sure Drama and Poetry and Recorded History were pre-reqs for it

If I realised it, maybe I would've gone for Ilkum over Urban Planning as well, as I will want to pre-build builders in preparation for Serfdom. But I don't know. Builder cost is currently 66 hammers, so I can at most invest 65 in prebuilds. Ilkum gives 30%, so at most 15 bonus hammers. Even if I prebuild a builder in every city (and e.g. with Bogota, I'm really not sure I should, focusing on building settlers and getting free builders via Ancestral Hall seems like a better play), that's 90 hammers at most. With how long Feudalism is going to take, I will get that many from Urban Planning

Meanwhile I think I'm all set on declare on Hattusa next turn

Since XP is one of the goals of this war, I do intend to kill off the archers as well

I also started the Etemenanki build (not pictured, switched after taking the screenshot), now that the policy for bonus hammers towards wonders is in place. Chopping will start next turn once Magnus is established

Finally, I am getting a great merchant next turn

Not a great one, just a free trade route. But it's not a complete dud, probably better than passing

Actually looking at BBG documentation, the GM I will get one is probably the best in classical era

Pindicator already claimed the one that claims a luxury (and I'm also not sure how useful that one is, when we have unlimited access to the 4 luxuries on our continent). The 60g one seems the worst; not sure how useful claiming a single tile is, but I guess similar value to just buying a tile?
Reply

you still get 3 charges with Crassus, so not too bad (probably better than the luxury one).
It seems BBG must be changing some part of the civic, I am sure you wouldn't be able to research feudalism that fast in the normal game ?
