Is that character a variant? (I just love getting asked that in channel.) - Charis

Civac and the Last Pitboss

I was pretty busy last week. But not to the point I couldn't have reported more. Sorry about that.

I asked for opinions about city spots because I was unsure how to settle the middle. Unfortunately, your settling plan has some problems. mischief There are several cities without first ring food resource and I also really wanted the border city with SD to be on a hill.

The situation:

Heliopolis and Elephantine recently whipped their granaries. The older cities are making workers and settlers. Currently, there are 5 active workers.

Last also got a lighthouse and is looking very nice.

Initially, I wanted to settle a city at the backline horses.

But it would be rather weak with only a crab for food (on north coast, not visible here) and the horses in second ring.

Instead, I planned to grab the horses in the middle of the map

and then changed my mind again to settle the border city with SD first because he is getting pretty close already. It should be safe enough. We are essentially tied for top power with our 7 warriors. So nobody else has any units either. For some reason I don't understand we have a trade connection to SD and can see he has copper connected by not his horses. SD also sent Fish/Fish last turn.

So the plan is to settle the border city on the hill, then grab the wheat/horse/stone spot, the island city in the northeast for better internal trade routes and furs and the border city with xist. The latter likely on the tile where his scout is or one tile further west if we are feeling frisky.

I don't know why xist is so behind either. He used to be a rather weak player but made a significant jump in ability in the last year or so.

Yes, please choose a Broodwar or SC2 player for the next city name. An introductory post for them is not necessary but would be appreciated. Also tell me if you want a specific city for the name, otherwise I go in order of settling.

Don't feel too bad about not reporting it felt much easier to see the state of the world just by logining and looking around. I think as long as there's nothing u want to discuss it's not a big deal.

I see what you mean about the city sites because I didn't quite realize how quickly they would be going up. For the Sheep+Wheat city I was thinking we could have time for borders to expand from the rice+gold city but this city packing works better.

Yeah judging from the demos it feels like we've you've just out simmed the rest of the field slightly. Especially since before the whips we were much further ahead on hammers.

For the Xist border city what do you think about 1S of the scout? I'm okay with giving up the marble since I think we're going to be able to maintain control over the marble on SD's side since we have 2 cities with the marble in 2nd ring on SD borders vs his 1 city at most in 1st ring. And if he does place a city next to the marble it looks really indefensible. If you don't like 1S I do prefer on the Scout over 1W since we'll lose the rice in the 2nd ring and once again claiming the marble isn't that important and denying it doesn't feel that important as well since he's so far behind.

For our next city I think Soulkey would be a very fitting person.

He has been a very dominant force in the current post Kespa era and arguably reaching Flash level dominance after winning 4 ASL's in a row. Winning first place in ASL Seasons 16-19 and even before this dominant streak he was known for having strong ZvT and ZvP but always falling a bit short thanks to ZvZ.

For the 1 season ASL was rebranded as SSL you can watch him take down Light in the Ro8. I picked this series in particular because I want to highlight game 3 on Kickback because he's a known Crazy Zerg user. This is something I like a lot about Soulkey is his ability to have well thought out strategies suitable for a map.

For my next player/city I have chosen Reach, the mantoss. He was one of the few Protoss players who was able to contend for the titles in the dark time (2002-2005) before the revolution. Even so he could never quite overcome the Zerg problem of the time and won only one premier title, Sky OSL 2002 against Boxer.

Normally, I don't include pictures but for Reach it is of course mandatory.

Finding games of that era is also not that easy. Here we have the finals of Sky OSL 2002 against Boxer in 240p and with Korean commentary like in the olden days. lol

Glad you're liking it although it's not nostalgia right now since the current ASL scene is actually quite active and BW is doing really well for itself. Ironically better than SC2 in some ways... But we can chalk that up to Blizzard mismanagement or something of that sort lol

For our the next player I think it's fitting for it to be none other than Flash

Oh man what is there to be said about him? He is the last and arguably greatest Bonjwa to have existed in SC BW history. He's won multiple OSL's and MSL's during the Kespa era. Possessing both the Golden Mouse and Golden Badge. During the SC 2 before the re emergence of ASL he never quite saw the same level of success in BW as he did in SC 2 tournaments but he always maintained a high winrate still in pro league and was still no push over.

He quickly swept up the competition in the early ASL seasons winning seasons 2-4 and saw the tournament organizers create the most hostile Terran map pool to date for ASL season 5. (can't find the YouTube video discussing it). While he was not able to prevail in that season he was still able to claim first place several seasons later in season 8. One of the funniest tournaments to watch though was ASL season 10 where Flash choose Random as a his race and proceeded to smash a lot of the competition. I seriously recommend watching the whole tournament as it was a thrill to watch and the extra randomess was a blast given that it wasn't something one would normally see in a tournament setting.

I've chosen his ASL season 8 finals vs snow to really display his dominance that he has even till very recently. And he's still a monster whenever he plays in the sponsored show matches between pros.

Also I just noticed mjmd declared war on Tarkeel which was a shocker to me... Maybe Tarkeel was a little too greedy with city placements but I haven't seen any cities change hands so far unless there was an autoraze. Still good developments to see popcorn

Although this should just mean good things for us in the future if both Tarkeel and Xist are in a weaker position. If we do invade Xist later on, a weak Tarkeel means he won't have the power to intervene or take Xist for himself. For now though I don't think there's anything to do besides develop. Although I'm trying to think if this means we want to be aggressive against Xist right now. Although he's down in food by a lot his city count is just 1 shy of ours so given time and space he will catch up at some point if we don't take space from him but I'm not sure if we're rly in a position to do anything super aggressive.

We only have so much more headway to plant more border cities since they're much pricier and we definitly need to backfill that island spot for better internal trade routes to fund more cities. Although maybe it's fine since we're very cottage light right now but I do feel like we might hit a wall very soon if we don't start growing more cottages.

Tarkeel definitely lost a city. It seems it was razed.

The settler and galley for the island are in the works. Should be settled t77.

You are correct about cottages. We are a bit short on workers so there was always something more important, in particular since we are scrambling to get to the middle quickly. The island trade routes and lighthoused lakes and gold mine will hold up for a bit longer but we really need to pump out some workers and make a bunch of cottages soon.

xist settled 3 cities in short order recently. But these cities aren't developed at all yet so he is still behind by quite a bit. I would refrain from doing anything aggressive (not that we really can) before horses are connected which should also be soon.

Yeah by aggressive I was just thinking about whether we should have settled the border city more towards the east as that’s the only thing aggressive that makes sense…

But given the Theology + AP bulb plan I don’t see a reason to do anything until knights realistically. Seems like the best time to make use of anything would be around then
