rpg playstyle (single base)

the thing i like most about MoM/CoM is the RPG aspect of being a wizard and just existing in a persistent living breathing procedural world. so much of the game lends itself to this, like hiring mercenaries to explore ruins, defeating the monsters there to earn treasure, using alchemy to convert those treasures into mana, using that mana to summon a fantastical minion, using that minion to attack a rival wizard fortress. there’s constant wizard progress too, as you manage your flow of power between researching new spells, building up mana reserves, or leveling up casting power.

the thing i like least is the tedium of expanding and managing cities and how the game exponentially snowballs with focus rapidly shifting to trying to just end the game.

as an rpg-oriented player, i want to imagine the world as a living, breathing world and i want to linger in it. i want a long game, if not a persistent (forever game) that i can just exist and play in.

so i’ve been thinking about a few artificial rules i could establish to facilitate the style of play i’m seeking.

which leads me to my question: has anyone played with a single town? basically, no settlers and raze when victorious.

i feel this style of play would facilitate RPG more. i imagine i would feel like a wizard just existing in a world, who happens to have a few structures built next to my fortress, but no empire. i would linger in this world longer.

i imagine the result would be a slower pace game that doesn’t snowball exponentially, maintaining some scarcity while also eliminating the tedium of expansion and construction. it seems it would also make conquest harder the further away from home you venture out. i imagine a large part of my focus would be strategically attacking a wizard when he gets too powerful to maintain balance in the world.

i would also consider not allowing myself to meld any nodes.

for game settings: i would consider doing easy difficulty, medium or large world, low magic, low resources, and maybe turn on monsters gone wild, order please, no overlap, sandbox mode, and leave me alone.

does anyone play like this? what books, spells, retorts do you like? would love to watch a let’s play if anyone has done this.

I think smaller landmasses would be better for one city challenges like this, but also, it would probably be difficult to keep up with other wizards unless you constantly raze their settlements or block them from settling. Also all those options exist in CoM 2, not 1. Would be better if you made this thread in the CoM 2 forum.

Easy to try: edit the file that handles what the AI builds each turn (I forget which file it is), and change number of settlers wanted to zero (I think that's what I did). The AI won't build any settlers. I've tried it. It does solve the problem of late-game tedium. It didn't solve the other problems, such as the AI doing nothing interesting each turn; just dancing its units around pointlessly. It also doesn't solve the problem of snowballing.

I like the concept of 4x games, but the inherent problems kill the fun for me.

I am absolutely in agreement with the Artorius on MoM having a great feel compared to most other strategy games, where it's easy to put yourself in the headspace of a wizard-king managing an empire in magical worlds. The setting and tone are really impressive. Even Alpha Centauri which goes out of it's way to try and give you more of a roleplaying feel doesn't come close to MoM for me.

It doesn't currently exist in the game but an option that would help with late game tedium wouldn't just be automated towns, but automated armies. Another thing that Alpha Centauri did well and coincidentally helped with the roleplaying. In Alpha Centauri when you create a unit you can just hit "ctrl+a" (if I remember correctly) to make the unit automated. And they are usually competent enough that they can be trusted to be automated late game. Let's you chill out more and just focus on the macro-game as it's starting to wrap up. I mean, it makes sense you trust your generals, marshals, military advisors, or whatever to be able to make choices of there own.

I think the suggested "single-base" challenge probably accomplishes the roleplaying aspect quite well from the perspective of a petty-wizard-king of a city-state, or re-contextualizing the world to be darker and more unforgiving. Like maybe the idea is that the administrative efforts of suppressing rebellions in conquered cities are too daunting and a "better-off-dead" approach is garnered. Or maybe the idea is that the wizard-king is determined to put the heathens to the sword for not worshiping their god(s) (or maybe even themselves?) The problem with that playstyle is that you need to think of a reason why you are an omnicidal maniac. Unless of course you are playing someone who is an omnicidal maniac I suppose : P

I like that in MoM you have a vizier, an apprentice, a cartographer and etc. as functions. It adds character, and makes it seem like you have a court that you attend when you are not busy summoning otherworldly entities to conquer and enslave the lands in your tower. Or making prank calls on your mirror-phone, or whatever other wizard stuff you get up too high up in your tower.

Still curious what mana crystals actually are. They can be produced at places of worship. So if your pray really hard over normal crystals do they get filled with magic? Or maybe depleted mana crystals are replenished when you pray over them. Are priests trained in those "how-to-make-your-own-crystal" kits and need tithes to pay for the materials? How does using a mana crystal work? Do you just need to hold it to suck the magic out? Do you need to eat it? If so, can it be made into breakfast cereal? Salt and sugar are both crystals, what do mana crystals taste like if they are edible? Would you zap your tongue if you tried to eat one? Are they made out of lead since you can use alchemy to turn them into gold?

Okay, I need to stop lol. Although, those ku-klux royal guard dudes, are they fanatics to your cause/gods, or are they just paid well? Do you think they ever chill out with the wizard-king when he/she's bored? Uhh, gotta really stop now sorry : P
