[Civforum PB90] Cornflakes Ventures Out of the Realms Beyond, and into the Unknown

This is an 18 player pitboss on the German civforum site. Very minor mod that is essentially Base BtS. Restricted leaders, randomly assigned eek There are some powerhouse civs/leaders in play, as well as some ... less than powerhouse.

I rolled France, of as-yet-unknown leader (3 possible). This is a very average result which shouldn't be targeted by the map makers for either nerfing or buffing. I am quite content with any of the leaders, but their musketeers offer some unique opportunities.

Based on what I have read about past custom maps on their site I expect the following:
• A decision on T0 to move to a plains hill
• Copper in the BFC of settle in place and the plains hill option

Some differences as compared to my historical RB game experience (specifically in the mods)
• Wonder failgold farming is not only allowed, but encouraged (2/3 available leaders have IND trait)
• Neighbors seems to be more aggressive in the early game on civforum
• Apostolic Palace resolutions are active, meaning beware of wars getting cut short, cities getting gifted away, and trade embargos. I'll have to look up the exact consequences when
• Wonders are more powerful since they have not been nerfed
--> Great Lighthouse, MoM

My goals for the game:
• Have fun!
• Don’t die early
• Play a competitive game without achieving empire size that requires really long turns.
• I don’t necessarily have aspirations for world domination this game. Let’s have some fun playing with new people and new game settings.

If u end up with a huge empire that takes awhile, id volunteer to play the turns.

I haven't been following the setup thread, but do you get to choose which of the French leaders you get or is that also random?

If you want to team up on this one that would be great!

The leader will also be random (or at least a mapmaker decision behind-the-scenes). It looks like the leaders will not be known until the game is launched.

That's a very interesting way to set up the game. Given my understanding of the Civforum meta, musketeers are a long way off. Napoleon might be strongest on paper with both CHA and ORG doing better on higher difficulties. IND isn't wasted either as you point out.

Some other observations based on the rules:
Rules (copied from PB 89) Wrote:- Elephants present, but building forbidden
- Deity Difficulty, Speed Normal
- NoDiplo: No PMs/Chat, only trade windows.
- City exchange only if it has no direct tactical impact on the war (far away from the frontline, I suppose). But the referee is welcome to decide that if he/she communicates the line as early as possible in the game.
- Siegarten: All on, but no victory resolution
- Events on, huts off
- Whoever declares war as first mover must not have been in play after the attacked player in the previous turn.
- Tech trade and exchange of course also.
- Espionage: No tech theft, no reli/government change

"Give away units", KGs and nuclear weapons (on/off) I would like to leave open and vote on it if necessary.
Events can be absolutely bonkers, so keep watch on the log every turn.
Espionage is available in limited form, including poison well.

I might stick around as a ded-lurker if you're interested.

The game is live! Leaders are finally revealed:

Players Wrote:Plemo - Asoka (SPI/ORG) Indian Empire
shade - Brennus (SPI/CHA) Celtic Empire
Jesper Portus - Charlemagne (IMP/PRO) Holy Roman Empire
firlefanzer - Cyrus (IMP/CHA) Persian Empire
Cornflakes - De Gaulle (IND/CHA) French Empire
Mr. X - Frederick (ORG/PHI) German Empire
GT+Empirate - Genghis Khan (AGG/IMP) Mongolian Empire
kreutzberg - Hammurabi (AGG/ORG) Babylonian Empire
Miguelito - Huayna Capac (IND/FIN) Incan Empire
TR - Mansa Musa (FIN/SPI) Malinese Empire
Aristobulus - Montezuma (AGG/SPI) Aztec Empire
Leolo - Pacal II (EXP/FIN) Maya Empire
Hubabl - Peter (EXP/PHI) Russian Empire
Hagen0 - Qin Shi Huang (IND/PRO) Chinese Empire
Xist10 - Ramesses II (IND/SPI) Egyptian Empire
vanguard - Shaka (EXP/AGG) Zulu Empire
naufragar - Suleiman (PHI/IMP) Ottoman Empire
Piccadilly - Wang Kon (FIN/PRO) Korean Empire

We ended up with De Gaulle (IND/CHA). IND is one of my favorite traits purely for the Forge production bonus.

Now, having downloaded the mod and logged in I present you with our starting screenshot:

Uhhhh ... in case it's not clear, we have a very teeny tiny starting island rolf Spoiler below has another screenshot rotated 45° which shows the water on the west/north sides a little more clearly.

This is a very unusual start, unlike any I have previously played. I thought we were on the end of a peninsula and I had initially moved 1N in order to preserve one of the few grassland tiles available in the starting BFC. But seeing that we are on an island we need to make sure that we play this correctly. For example if I had settled in place we would have been locked at just a single city on our starting island. If we settle where I am currently standing we can get a 2nd city on the southern tip. If we move 1E we can also get a 3rd city on the Furs.

From a defense perspective, having 3 cities on the starting island to whip vs. 1 is a huge safety play. Also having 3 cities would delay the need for Sailing. But at the same time, without lighthouses those cities wouldn't have many tiles to collectively work. I definitely need to sim this out and see what works best. Let's see if we can figure out how to break this puzzle. (By the way, I think that the starting optimization puzzle this is my favorite part of the game)
