Building the DOS version of 1oom?

Does anyone have an idea how to build the DOS version of 1oom - that is, generate a DOS .exe binary?  I can build the Win and Linux versions but there appear to be no build instructions for DOS at all.  Do you actually need to do it from within DOS or can you cross-compile from Unix or something?  Does anyone know how the original author built it?

Update: I came across the DOS build instructions in the INSTALL file and eventually got a build working myself.
