[PB81] New Variant Game: A Tale of Two Continents

As promised, here's the signup-thread for the Variant Game I mentioned earlier.
(August 20th, 2024, 06:15)Tarkeel Wrote: A Tale of Two Continents
The core concept is to have two more-or-less natural continents with about 4 players on each. The lurkers will try to split the players in two groups based on perceived skill, and have the best players on the same continent. Will one player manage to consolidate the resources of their continent under one rule?
Proposed start acceleration: Start with a worker and one additional first-tier tech.

My initial thoughts had them as mirrors of each others, but the more I think about it the less I like that idea. Current plan is to roll two different pangea maps and merge them into the same map as different continents, and add islands as necessary. Starts and resources will be balanced within their continent.

Settings:
Number of players: 8+ (can expand if there's interest)
Mod: Close to Home 5.0
True AI Diplo
No huts, unit gifting, or tech trading
No abusive or lopsided city trades; Extorting for peace is OK but check with lurkers?

Proposed acceleration:
Start with one extra first-tier tech (selected in secret) and worker

Up for voting (spreadsheet):
Difficulty: Monarch/Emperor (or split between continents?)
Picking: Random/Block/Snake
Barbarians: Off/No cities+ships/Normal/Raging
Spies: Off/On
Score: Off/On
Map trading: Off/On
Events: Off/On/Double
Start accelerations: None/Tech/Tech+Worker

Don't feel super strongly about any of them.

Can't join another game atm (even two is too many), will lurk with interest

I'm in as long as events are off. The counterargument is usually "your neighbors matter more", but in a game with roughly balanced neighbors things like huts and events have no place.

I can create a voting spreadsheet for rest later.

Events being off is damn near mandatory. Some people getting Bronze working while you get a map of what you have already seen.. Yeah, if the whole idea is to put people of similar skill level on the same landmass.. Dont add any RNG to it.

Same feeling with barbs. Too much RNG. Im not AS strongly opposed to barbs, but i dont like them in this scenario.

Im in. I cant wait to have my own "slightly stronger than green(s), worse than emperor gandhi ai" island.
"Superdeath seems to have acquired a rep for aggression somehow. [Image: noidea.gif] In this game that's going to help us because he's going to go to the negotiating table with twitchy eyes and slightly too wide a grin and terrify the neighbors into favorable border agreements, one-sided tech deals and staggered NAPs."

If you admit a green player, I'd love to participate,  here are my choices

Difficulty: Monarch
Picking: Snake
Barbarians: Normal
Spies: On
Score: On
Map trading: On
Events: Off

From this settings, the only one I really don't like is "Events". The rest I don't mind other options.

Great to start in October.  I have plenty of time.

If there are too many players, I wouldn't mind sharing or deadlurking someone.

Updated the sign-up list; while there's only two slots open, there might be an option to expand the roster some.
(Mjmd and Superdeath, did you want the offered duel-island?)

Events are not the same as huts. Events have been modified to tune out the worst offenders. As for barbs, my feeling is that them being off makes for more variance than on, since running farmers gambits then becomes mandatory.

Sign me up. 2 games are near the end, I think I could play another.

Difficulty: I played PB mostly on Deity, so I'm impartial. But I think, split difficult seems to be a good idea.
Picking: Block
Barbarians: No ships (and cities) - has an RNG element, but still an important factor ingame. Ships can be very difficult to defend against early and cities are even more RNG.
Spies: On
Score: On
Map trading: On
Events: Off - Not that bad as huts, still a potential problem.
