Japper is back in BBG

Hello everyone,

Been a while since I played one of these... let's see how rusty I am.

Posting T1 in a minute, loading up the game now.

Boot up the game to find I'm Peter of Russia:

Not one of the civs BBG workshops around really, I think just the "expending a great person adds a tile in the city with a Lavra" is new? Still though, good for hiding to start in the tundra, no-one wants your land and it is far away anyway. Hopefully I can stay away from Arch (who got Aztec... oh boy bang )

Start is pretty wretched... lol And the Warrior move revealed only a single reasonable grass hill tile far in the distance. So I settle one south and pop the citizen on the dyes (will secure a pantheon). Start on Scout and Astro research (may only do halfway, hope the scout finds a NW for the boost). I'll need Mining and Animal Husbandry soon too.

Some thoughts, though of course, subject to change:

Think I could swing the Temple of Artemis here, that'd put those extra hammers to use. Usually not a very hotly contested wonder due to the camp requirement.

I'll also get some pretty sweet Campuses and Holy Sites down the line. Lavra's get priority though

Think I'll try a Moksha opener, it is all the rage in the current patch of BBG. With a long-term view towards Grand Master's Chapel. Overall a religious cultural vibe, think there's some potential there that the folks at RB haven't quite unlocked yet.

Thoughts on opponents:

Arch-Aztec: Very strong civ, very strong player.

Archduke is scary, not sure what I expect from the other guys, the games I've followed from them have been... mixed in terms of results.

Greenline, Saladin Vizier: the Old School Arabia, a bit caught up with by the times, pretty solid civ still. Greenline has gotten rushed in both games of his I've followed. Hard to say how he plays when (if) he gets a chance to grow.

Pindicator, Nzinga Mbande: The Kongo has never looked as good. Not only are you not actively nerfed by your leader, now you actually get a really solid bonus to boot!

Yuri, Gran Columbia: Nerfed in BBG IIRC? Still a decent civ from what I've heard... starting to think I drew the short straw cry

Wasn't expecting much outta the turn, but end up meeting Hunza to the west (idiot me! banghead  should've checked the settler lense! Could've missed that first meet!). Hunza's ability is pretty spicy: Traders generate +1 gold for every 5 tiles they travel. That scales very well, though I doubt we'll get an Alliance/Trading partner with only 4 people, especially since, with us being Russia/Peter, we get free science and culture, though maybe our Tundra isolation is a positive there... one can hope bow

It's quest is to trigger an Inspiration for Foreign Trade, with the Scout finishing in 2 turns I have a shot at getting it in a timely fashion, might have to blitz it up north to find a continent split (east is blocked in by that mountain range). I'm also going to almost be forced into Commercial Hubs, so just getting up to 3 envoys is very worthwhile.

BTW I'm thinking Slinger after the Scout, Archery is required for ToA, the Eureka would be nice, and there's always loads of barbs in the tundra, who'll all be gunning for us first.

No city growths yet according to the score screen, which I think means that no-one has a 3+food tile (IIRC that is growth to pop 2 turn 5), or at least isn't working one? Might see next turn.

My cap is growing in a fast 11 turns... not having at least a 2 food tile really sucks. If I manage to swing a Religious CS first meet I could pick up the Food From Camps Pantheon (Goddess of the Hunt, buffed in BBG, I think, but couldn't find a list) to solve my dire food situation. Maybe pump up the capital later with a few trade routes. If I can get food somehow it is a potential powerhouse with all those mines, hills and camps.

Hope the zipped image works, my screenshot exceeded attachment size. Not very important either way, just wanted to show that I finally found some reasonable land north of Hunza, with a new lux: olives. Scout finished this turn (on to a Slinger, then builder, and then I'll FINALLY have enough food to grow to size 2 and build a settler to get out of this Antarctic shithole) and heads up north along the capital's river, hopefully finding us a decent spot to plant our first city and fingers crossed some CS and a continent split. C'mon RNGesus, you've tested me enough with this starved spawn. bow

Damn that limit (was only 518 as well, so just over... sigh), I'll try reducing my resolution next time I play, see if that works. So... yet another zipped image...

Anyway, I got my natural wonder! jive And the land up north is gorgeous: rivers, luxuries, FOOD and the wonder yields faith and culture  dancing

Good luck! That is some sweet production around your capital. Have you thought about how you are going to feed your pop?

I used windowed mode and adjusted the resolution to find a size that gave screenshots in the 400mb range.

I discussed the food issues further up the thread, but to sum up:

1. Take the Pantheon that boosts Camps (Goddess of the Hunt, iirc in BBG as well)
2. Run trade routes in the reverse direction (so from cap to expansions, rather than the usual way around)
3. I'll have a religion online soon, so I'll probably pick up some beliefs like Feed the World

Thanks, I'll try your tips for the screenshots.
