Is that character a variant? (I just love getting asked that in channel.) - Charis

A random idea

I was playing some SP recently. I realized that one thing I like about the realms is that I can pop in and out of a game without forcing it to end. So on a lark, I took a peek at pvpgn.org, grabbed the binaries, and set out to set up a private realm for myself. After a bit of head-beating, I got it working.

Now I'm wondering about having a private realm again, like when Roland's was available.

Would this be a good thing?

Here are the pros/cons, as I see them (you decide which is which <g> ):

- Rarely need passworded games.

- Can make all the games visible in the game list (e.g., not just hell games).

- I think you can have the World Event and set the trigger conditions. (One preconfigured option is "set and unique rings" - finally a use for Cathan's Seal)

- Can email chars to people who want them for SP.

- Game is the same as SP/LAN/Open, so none of the realms' "server-side fixes".

- Can choose to run a mod. (For example, I'd want to add the four b.net only runewords, and maybe we could make up some other, custom, low-to-mid-level ones.)

- If the ladder reset includes a 1.11 patch, the server software may not be updated to handle it immediately.

- Would want to host it on a machine with a permanent IP address. (Mine from Comcast is dynamic and changes every so often.)

- Can increase the number of characters per account. (I set mine to 20.)

Having a private realm is a Good Thing
Playing on Roland’s realm was a positive experience. We saw more activities partly because it was easier to see who is on and where. The main reason is due to a larger "friendly" user base. There were special invites from other communities who melted with the RBDers eventually.

In the end, we would see 99% of the games using the RBD game name and convention even when no RBDer is around ;-) Games on Roland’s were very rarely PW’d – Except when I was doing certain MF runs that might prove troublesome with more players. BTW, the reason I rarely put anyone on my Friends List is that it can get annoying for people to see me jumping in and out of Meph runs every minute :P

I think it might upset the balance but not in a big way considering what we might gain from it. What is deliciously tempting is that we can trigger the clone easily(?) for yet another “uber” monster to beat. More challenges.

The only time that came in handy for me was to beta test 1.10. I haven’t played SP for years.

But with ladder capability and/or ladder like difficulty?

Hehe, that’s the same thing you and Zed was hoping for on Roland’s realm. Anyway, here’s the link to the mod discussion back then. It covered pretty well what we feel about mod(s) but we can talk if you have something new to bring to the table.

Okay with me. Personally, as I have said a thousand times, I wish Bliz would stop breaking the game. Leave it alone.

I can buy static IP from telus, unfortunately, I often have a few resource hungry programs running in the background frown so I am not suitable for hosting unless I get a new machine.

And best of all, no burning in characters… um, mules ;-)
