Is that character a variant? (I just love getting asked that in channel.) - Charis

RB PBEM #1 - Pericles (SPOILERS!)

My scout popped a hut (gold) and I settled on the spot. Sullla's maps rarely have tricks at the starting position. I could see a hint of coast in the north before I settled.

Possibly 1NE would have been better since it makes my capital coastal, but I'm happy with my starting position. I like my river. I get to work a 3/1/0 sugar tile to start which is great.

I started with a worker and agriculture, neglecting early defence. Surely no-one would warrior-rush the guy who set up the game, right?

When chosing my leader, I knew I wanted creative. For me it's the best trait for this kind of game - you save many hammers in the early game by not having to build monuments. Also you can culturally bully your neighbours. For the second trait I took a punt on philosophical to see how well it worked in multiplayer. Possibly it won't be as strong as vs the AI because you cannot guarantee trade partners for techs you lightbulb. But I think it could be good early-game trait - an economic boost without having to work a load of cottages.

Having revealed stone and bearing Pericles' traits, I'll give serious consideration to the pyramids. My initial tech order will be agriculture - mining - bronze working.

Hmm, I'm sure I have seen forested sugar before. It doesn't come up in the more common maps, but I don't think it's unnatural.

Sugar doesn't appear naturally on standard maps, no. Make of that what you will. smile

As you will get stone in the third ring and as you are creative, I think settling in spot was the right idea.

Just a note that I popped my second hut and got some more gold. Scouting has revealed wines, silks and pigs.

I have a suspicion that Sullla based this map on a highlands map.

I was hoping my scout could skirt round that lake and explore the land west of my capital, but all of these peaks suggests a mazy ridgey highlands map. This means that (a) the map is bigger than I first assumed. Highlands maps normally are a size bigger than they state, so this is probably simliar in size to a normal map. And (b) it means I need a lot of scouts! So I chose scout this turn as my next build. My worker started a farm on the rice tile.

Looks like if I want pyramids then I won't have to build another city to hook up the stone, since my borders pop again very soon. Very good! There is a pigs city in the south that looks nice, but I don't plan to build a settler for a while and when I do I'll know where copper is so that will probably be my first priority. Having pigs will encourage me to research animal husbandry in the future and that will reveal horses.

I think my tech plan is bronze working so see if I have copper. If I don't, then I'll go for archery. If I do, well probably The Wheel.

Production plan is to build a warrior after this scout.

Find some copper, then settle it. Need more scouting!
