PBEM 26 Organizing/Tech Thread

Hey, so again, a huge number of PBEMs have finished recently and I think we could use another. Gaspar and I have been talking about a slightly different settings PBEM, with a much more maritime theme:

Settings list:

Trait bans (if any): No Fin
Civilization bans (if any): Dutch
Wonder bans (if any): GLH, Colossus
Unit bans: WE, Nukes, Spies.
Corporations (all allowed/none allowed/no Sid's only): Sid's off.
Diplomacy (Normal/CTON/In-game only): Normal.
Barbs (on/off/raging): Off.
Espionage (Passive only (typical RB setting)/Active allowed): Passive only.
Coastal Blockades (on/off): Off.
Any other sundries you can think of: Huts off.

Not a sign up, but if you are doing a tiny islands thing - would you look at banning Vikings/Dutch/Portuguese?

Nope, we figure with five players nobody would get completely shafted for picks. I can think of seven good civs for this just off-hand.

The hacked map size also affects corporate resource productivity, larger maps give less stuff per resource. You de-overpower Sushi just by doing that, though you also nerf all the other corps too (which may be a good thing, or at least acceptable collateral.)

Cool, I did not know that. I'd classify that under "happy accident". The only other effects I'd be aware of would be higher draft limits and a few more monuments, theaters, and universities needed for SoZ, Globe, and Oxford.

For your information: large size reduces #cities maintenance 16.7% from standard but increases distance maintenance by 12.5%. Techs cost 7.7% more, corporations need 33% more resources to have the same effect, and you can draft 4 times. War weariness is a bit lower (huh), you need 7 buildings to build a national wonder, and the base value of trade routes (which is greater with distance) is 20% lower.

I'd ban Sid's Sushi, and probably FIN.

Sid's I think is too much, so I'd agree with banning it. GLH I don't care about, metagame can take care of that, but banning it probably makes it easier.

Re: FIN - yeah, it's probably the right choice, though I can think of a few alternatives worth trying. If people really want to ban it, I could accede, but I think there are enough alternatives to make it worthwhile. Mostly I wanted something more along the lines of a hardcore maritime settling race. And we haven't really tried anything without continents of some sort since PBEM2, so it seemed like it was time for some variety.

I'd actually be perfectly fine with no Leader or Civ bans for this game, since I think there are enough interesting choices out there. Hopefully Commodore and I aren't the only ones interested, however. lol
I've got some dirt on my shoulder, can you brush it off for me?

Banning blockades is so silly. Defender has reinforce line and on a water-heavy map navy should be emphasized.

IMO this game will be decided on people getting forked @ sea though. FIN might not win this...philosophical leader of dutch might however. Grab some BCs or early AD 6 str ocean faring units and start ripping people to shreds.

With lots of coast, FIN is strong as ever. CHA marginally helps ships but I don't think it's enough to matter. CRE remains excellent as a lot of fishing villages are going to need a border pop and the trait nails it instantly.

Someone getting colossus early can cause grief too.

I've been tossing around the idea of signing up for another game, but I'm not sure a water based map that could turn on getting forked by East Indiamen is exactly what I'm looking for lol

Put me down as tentative / interested
