So here's what I'm working with right now, I kind of dislike the map though.

Plako, do you have the map file for 17? I think I'm going to be ensmallenating the map somewhat.

Posting from my phone or I'd link the map now but I have a copy of it I can post later if someone doesn't beat me to it. You may also check in the general civ forum, there is a thread with links to a lot of the PBEM maps, 17 might be available there, or via the PBEM17 setup thread.

Unfortunately, the recent boondoggle seems to have messed up a lot of those files.

Just so you know, you spelt "barrel" incorrectly in the thread title.

I haven't downloaded the map yet, but the starting screenshots are...interesting (most likely not a bad thing). The larger screenshot has a huge dearth of hills and, in my opinion, the vast dry grassland swaths are boring.
Merovech's Mapmaking Guidelines:
0. Player Requests: The player's requests take precedence, even if they contradict the following guidelines.

1. Balance: The map must be balanced, both in regards to land quality and availability and in regards to special civilization features. A map may be wonderfully unique and surprising, but, if it is unbalanced, the game will suffer and the player's enjoyment will not be as high as it could be.

2. Identity and Enjoyment: The map should be interesting to play at all levels, from city placement and management to the border-created interactions between civilizations, and should include varied terrain. Flavor should enhance the inherent pleasure resulting from the underlying tile arrangements. The map should not be exceedingly lush, but it is better to err on the lush side than on the poor side when placing terrain.

3. Feel (Avoiding Gimmicks): The map should not be overwhelmed or dominated by the mapmaker's flavor. Embellishment of the map through the use of special improvements, barbarian units, and abnormal terrain can enhance the identity and enjoyment of the map, but should take a backseat to the more normal aspects of the map. The game should usually not revolve around the flavor, but merely be accented by it.

4. Realism: Where possible, the terrain of the map should be realistic. Jungles on desert tiles, or even next to desert tiles, should therefore have a very specific reason for existing. Rivers should run downhill or across level ground into bodies of water. Irrigated terrain should have a higher grassland to plains ratio than dry terrain. Mountain chains should cast rain shadows. Islands, mountains, and peninsulas should follow logical plate tectonics.

I agree with Merovech, probably too much unbroken grassland around the start. Maybe throw in some plains or hills to break it up a bit. As it is it looks like all cottages all the time and coastal cities are going to have to have excess food for whips because there aren't a lot of hammers to pull out of the earth.

Oh, definitely, this is more land shape than final land composition, I'll be adding plains/forests/hills aplenty.

India and Japan can both settle on a PH next to the fish. All others won't get that benefit. India will not even lose their food (which on top of it is irrigated rice and therefore at the start even stronger than the unirrigated corn).

India will lose both sheep and the rice if they move to the fish plains hill, and most of the river tiles, so in that case it's a real hard choice.

Is 20 tiles the cutoff for building real ships, or is it 21?
Furthermore, I consider that forum views should be fluid in width
