Might be better to tech up while spamming cities and building units (mainly x-bows but a few cats for later bombard upgrades). You now have a LOT of good land (with lots of commerce tiles). It would be a shame to not fill up the land.

I will shoot for a 4th settler from the capital and take a long hard look at the map. I would love to settle the Petra site and I will maybe even do so.

Late at night yesterday, so report today.

With water mill and a 3rd mine done this turn we race through the tech tree.

   

As suboptimal´s strength fades, so goes my caution. In the turn after taking the city we push on and run down a fleeing archer and a crossbowman in an alacazar.

We inch ever closer to the city, using suboptimals Alcazar in the north against him next turn. I kill 2 horseman, the one in the north with a softening crossbowman attack and 2 melee attacks and the in the south is softened by the hetairoi and finished by the 2nd crossbowman. How does suboptimal keep making those, we are in the 2 figures soon with the horseman kills.

   

Barbradar in the north. I adjusted my dotmap, science site will be claimed, buy a tile and put down an aqueduct.
Iron Mountain site will be settled 1-2 turns later

   

River Valley Site will be settled in 3 turns.

   

Would love to keep Valetta, but it is probably in the way and 2 envoys of Alhambram are in there.

   

And Alhambram just got a religion. Defender of the faith. banghead Which means Emperor K will be an easy target and Alhambram a worse target.

This may mean I am better off killing Emperor K on my own. The culture rate of Persia is also quite impressive. I may shoot for a religion myself.

A bit in a hurry, so despite my plan no district replanning.

I will probably just lay them all out and do a summary when I am done with Australia and settled my new cities.

Speaking of which. 2 crossbow attacks and the sword is history. No attack whatsoever, although we move up some pieces and heal some. Next turn will be a devastating strike to the city and the remaining horseman.

   

And endless headache with barbarians in the north. I might upgrade a hypasist just to protect it.

One turn before Australia falls.

Another horseman bites the dust.

   

And we invest the city in earnest, with a tiny sliver of blue remaining, so a shot and an attack on one of my wounded units is likely.
We could actually have another loss which is disappointing to say the least. We kill the southern horseman as well.

   

So much for the report.

The strategic situation is complicated.

Whilst I am in quite a dominating position after my conquest of Australia, I have been burnt before and I may not take Persia or Alhambram lightly. With no GG and no DotF religion (what a sneaky stonehenge grab there, Alhambram) not only is a religion is far off for Emperor K, but I have no intention of not getting that great General. With another 10 points this turn to a GG, Emperor K would need to run 2-3 projects and would likely miss critical infrastructure that way.

As a thank you for not dowing suboptimal and because it is in my best interest that Emperor K lives, I not only send him a delegation but also announce my supportive intentions by sending a bit of money.

Granted it is not much but I know from my experience, that every little bit help and this may mean an additional crossbowmen in the fight down the road.

   

We plan and lay down districts in the south. Tathingdwen will get a cultural district and encampment for barb control.
The former australian capital, Tremredare will add a cultural district to its campus (yeah, I am worried about culture with choral music and without any cultural pantheon I am behind even with my size.)
Cassowary will soon be mine and will have a campus and add an encampment and a commercial district down the road.
Fadrex(former Fadrex City) will do a Holy Site (why not get a religion, it prevents a sneaky religious win down the road and I can leisurely get a GP with 3 players left in the game) and a Harbour.

   

In the centre:

My other jewel apart from my capital, Austrex will not only get a harbour and an industrial zone to its akwardly placed campus (sue me, I was worried about suboptimal science rate when I laid those down. crazyeye ) but we have planned out a location for the VA, pretty much the only way I can loose this game militarilly by now. We will push for it as a next project, so Austrex will lay claim on prime trade routes and worker support from other cities.

Urteau my worker city will finish its campus (nicely located between coffee tiles and probably get a cultural district.

   

In the north:

The capital will finish its settler and then finally get the long overdue granary, campus, commercial district and will finish an industrial district later.
Both newly founded cities will lay down Holy Sites and Aqueducts and concentrate on those. And if I manage a backfill city, it will go for encampment together with Science Site to protect against the barbs.

   

The army will rest shortly and recuperate and immeaditly rush to Valetta lay siege to it and conquer it. Its suzerain bonus is of no interest to me and Alhrambram has 3 envoys which I won´t be able to match anyway.

As expected, suboptimal bows out gracefully. He fought valiantly to the last and it seems updated his thread regularly. (Emperor K seems to have stopped.)

So, as it is early in the morning I will concentrate on my turnset. The war with suboptimal warrants some After Action analysis, because from milpower and tech it was fought on even terms. Whilst a GG supported push can be fought off it needs a much firmer grasp on the military mechanics and prepared defenses to fend off. Basically Suboptimal never recovered the initiative after the defeat of his western army in the gap.

   

With no archer, but a horseman in the city and probably bastions, the city takes 2 shots and 4 attacks to finish it off, but finish it off, I do.

   

Our bonus inspiration is Celestial Navigation. duh  My own worker was 2 turns off from that. But yeah, the macedonian ability is as useful as Vilnius or Seoul atm. Meaning not at all.

My science jumps to 32 and culture to 16 which means only in culture Persia has a chance to keep atm, we will see if he can finish Emperor K in time. The milpower suggests they are both capable of stalemating the other. I offer a DoF to Emperor K, he did not supportdow™ suboptimal and thus he will reap the rewards of it.

In the north Valtroux is founded and is the only city (I think) that I am buying a tile thus far. But it is breakeven in gold after 50 turns and boy do I want those 3 science right now.
Not to have Valtroux be only about the science, I start an aqueduct immeaditly.

   

And with the war over and the front against Alhambram probably 10+ turns away, I see no reason not to boost my economy further and switch out of Oligarchy which has done its job very well. We slot in Ilkum and leave Colonization till the capital is done.

   

The next turns we will finally focus on some much need economic buildings, heal up the army and then we strike decisively for Valetta. I will probably switch to Maneuver at some point to get 2-3 more hetairoi as barb patrols in. I want my 2 warriors as hypasist or soon musketman on the front line.

With the elimination of suboptimal, the turn just turned around in 1hour! eek

Well, hello to you to Jadwiga. Emperor K takes over the 1st play spot.

   

No tactical before and after screens of the army for a bit. Who wants to see me kill random barbs and CS units.
In the south, Genghis and two Crossbows go west to kill strugglers of Valetta for XP and scout out the area whilst the army heals.

Boudicca supports barb patrols further east.

Basically we slot monument repairs, builders everywhere and I rearrange some tiles for more efficiency.

   

In the north a settler moves into position, the capital now size 8 is nearly done with the 4th settler of my push and I plan 2 more builders and get on much needed infrastructure. Austrex will chop/finish/overflow a galley into a harbour.
