Cloak & Dagger Thread

Ok, long past time for a Cloak and Dagger update.

Also, please ignore my last post here. I don't know if it's the sequential turns, or what, but I seem to keep getting the turn of score increases wrong. The score changes actually occurred on the following turns:

Let's go all the way back to Turn 29, where we had 8k Soldiers points unaccounted for. Well, I somehow missed that Pirates also got a tech this turn, which is almost certainly BW (12 turns after their last tech).

On Turn 30 Menagerie got another Pop increase, which was their Capital growing to size-4 (27k pop increase).

On Turn 31 Menagerie got a tech, and it took them 6 turns to complete. We don't have a demo screen so we don't know what the power increase was, but between T30 and T32, there was a total power increase of 12k. I think it makes sense that they finished The Wheel.

On Turn 32 TEAM got a tech, 11 turns after their last tech. This has got to be BW to account for the remaining 8k soldier increase. I never actually assigned them their T21 tech, but obviously it was Mining.

On Turn 33 we got Mining.

On Turn 34 there were two pop increases; Pirates and Trolls. However, both of these occurred after we played and took the Demos screenshot, so I don't know yet if that was them planting new cities, or growing their capitals.

And that gets us all caught up.

Also, there was a 4k Soldier increase on T33. I don't think either pop increase comes with a 1k soldier increase, so probably 2 warriors were build last turn.

There was no soldier increase on turn 34, and I think all the prior score increases can be accounted for by the techs that were discovered.

I would guess the Pirates and Trolls pop increases were new cities being founded. Rival best land area jumped to 45K, with average at 33 and fraction K -- this sounds like a creative civ popped borders and added 9 for a second city as rival best (Trolls), with a non cultural civ adding 9 for a second city (Pirates) to get the average up. (The other creative civ, TEAM, has also boosted the average land but would not have a second city yet. Probably.) I have not run the numbers exactly, but that feels about right to me -- 2 rival civs have second cities.

Another short update from the C & D department:

As mentioned in the Turn Discussion thread, the demos confirmed that Pirates and Trolls settled city 2 on T34, and TEAM planted their second city on T35.

There were no score changes on Turn 36, and so far there have been no score changes on Turn 37.

There was a 2k soldier increase on T37, and Rival Worst went up 2k, so that team built a Warrior.

Whoops, falling behind on C&D again. I'll try to catch us up here.

We left off on Turn 37, where both teams who played after us had score changes. The Pirates finished a tech, which took them 8 turns. I think Pottery makes sense here. The Trolls actually lost 4 points, meaning they 1-pop whipped something! I don't think they have Pottery yet, so this was probably a Worker.

On Turn 38 TEAM finished a tech, which took them 6 turns to finish. Really not sure about this one, maybe Archery? Or Myst? Menagerie settled their second city on this turn. We know this because there is a 1k total pop increase.

On Turn 39, it seems that TEAM settled a third city? From the Demo screenshot on T37, before Troll's whip, until the Demo screenshot on T39, after Menagerie and TEAM have each had pop increases, there was a 1k total population increase. I think this means that 2 cities were settled, for a 2k increase, and the whip removed 1k from the total pop count. There was a 16k soldier increase from T37 to T39. Perhaps some advanced units are coming out, such as Chariots (4k), Spearmen (4k), or Axemen (6k).

On Turn 40 Menagerie completed a tech, which took them 9 turns. I would guess Pottery, but I don't think they have Agri yet. I'm really not sure about this one. Trolls finished a tech, and also got a pop growth. Since both their cities were at size 1, I'm not sure which grew. I guess we could look in game to see how big Caipirinha is. Their tech took them 11 turns. I'm thinking AH for them.

Turn 41 just began, and there haven't been any score changes yet.

Thanks for your work, btw.
Merovech's Mapmaking Guidelines:
0. Player Requests: The player's requests take precedence, even if they contradict the following guidelines.

1. Balance: The map must be balanced, both in regards to land quality and availability and in regards to special civilization features. A map may be wonderfully unique and surprising, but, if it is unbalanced, the game will suffer and the player's enjoyment will not be as high as it could be.

2. Identity and Enjoyment: The map should be interesting to play at all levels, from city placement and management to the border-created interactions between civilizations, and should include varied terrain. Flavor should enhance the inherent pleasure resulting from the underlying tile arrangements. The map should not be exceedingly lush, but it is better to err on the lush side than on the poor side when placing terrain.

3. Feel (Avoiding Gimmicks): The map should not be overwhelmed or dominated by the mapmaker's flavor. Embellishment of the map through the use of special improvements, barbarian units, and abnormal terrain can enhance the identity and enjoyment of the map, but should take a backseat to the more normal aspects of the map. The game should usually not revolve around the flavor, but merely be accented by it.

4. Realism: Where possible, the terrain of the map should be realistic. Jungles on desert tiles, or even next to desert tiles, should therefore have a very specific reason for existing. Rivers should run downhill or across level ground into bodies of water. Irrigated terrain should have a higher grassland to plains ratio than dry terrain. Mountain chains should cast rain shadows. Islands, mountains, and peninsulas should follow logical plate tectonics.

Seconding the thanks for the continuing work. goodjob

The possibility of stronger units entering the game worries me. TEAM has already shown aggression, and one chariot or axe could wipe out our entire civ right now. frown

No problem! I'll try to keep this thread more current, so we're not finding out about important things like whips 4 turns later.

TEAM has gotten another Pop increase this turn (T41). We'll know once we get the demos, but this is either their capital growing from 3 to 4, or their second city growing from 1 to 2.

Hmm, Pirates lost 4 points, and then gained them back during their turn. I guess that has to be them whipping their capital, and growing their second city up to size 2.

Time for another C&D dump! I'll go all the way back to T41 to make sure we don't miss anything:

On Turn 41, TEAM grew their capital from size 3 to size 4.

On Turn 42, Pirates whipped their capital from size 2 to size 1, and then grew their second city to size 2. I am guessing they whipped a Settler? We completed BW this turn (at end of turn).

On Turn 43 TEAM whipped their capital that just grew from size 4 down to size 2. I have no idea what this might have been. Pirates also increased their score, but I am not sure I am reading Civstats correctly. It looks like they got a 4-point increase for a pop growth, and then 22 hours later they got a 10-point increase, for what I can only assume is a Tech completing and another pop growth? One of these pop growths is probably them settling their 3rd city with the settler they whipped last turn. If anyone else has any ideas about what happened here, I'm all ears.

Turn 44 is another confusing one, this time with TEAM's score. It looks like they got a 23-point increase for their capital's 3rd ring border pop (since they're Creative), then they lost 4 points for a 1-pop whip, and finally they got a 6-point increase for completing a Tech. As far as the whip, they either whipped their Capital AGAIN from size 2 to size 1, or earlier when I thought they might have settled a 3rd city, that was actually their second city growing to size 2, allowing them to whip it this turn. As far as their Tech, I'm not even going to guess, but it's been 12 turns since they last completed a Tech. Also on T44, the Tropical Trolls got 6 points for a Tech (only took them 4 turns to complete, with only 3 total pop), and Menagerie got 16 points for a Wonder (Stonehenge).

And it looks like Civstats is showing that the Trolls got their 23-point increase for 15 land tiles for the capital's 3rd ring border pop on Turn 45. I'm still very confused on how Civstats handles sequential turns, so I don't know why TEAM got the points on T44, while Trolls got it on T45, unless the Trolls delayed their border pop by a turn by revolting into Slavery before T25.
