So parkin, what exactly happened to you in PB 14? Why did you abandon it?

Had to deal with several family matters including a serious illness, which took priority over everything else.

Turn 53

Rafiki the Impi finally got rid of the barbarian Lion and Warrior which had been blocking the Scout's route west since Turn 45.

Turn 55

Rolled up to the border and made our first official contact of the game: Gavagai.

Hmm, slightly miffed to see he has two Fish lakes and Ivory 2 tiles from his capital. A city 1E of the Ivory could have +14 food at size 3 if it shared the capital Fish. Wouldn't have minded a Fish lake start ourselves with the Productive trait... oh well. We admittedly have Ivory too, but it's 10 tiles from our capital and likely to be a border city.

In domestic news, we finished the final mine at Antelope. Soon it'll be time to build cottages and grow, but first we need another Settler. Incidentally, one nice thing about the updated Charismatic trait is that it frees up your military to guard your borderlands early on. Notice we're at size 6 with no garrison.

Chopped the Granary to completion at Bonobo.

Turn 58

Revolted to Slavery. Yes, quite late for it - but we'd got by just fine on chops until now. This is the first time in the game it's actually worth us starting to use the whip.

Sent Zazu south and uncovered Gavagai's second city. We can also see mackoti's borders, pressed right up against the borders of Aksum. Gavagai only founded it 3 turns ago... that was a pretty brazen plant! Not to mention the fact that I haven't seen any sign of an army from him. I can only assume there's an enforced peace between them right now, because otherwise that Worker is on a suicide mission (not to mention the toothpick city defence). Incidentally, notice Gavagai has another early luxury - Silver - right by his capital, and with nice adjacent food. Sure it's tundra, but that really doesn't reduce the value of having another close and powerful early resource. On a river too, just noticed. Unfortunately it looks like it will all go to mackoti sooner or later too.

Seven generated a Great Scientist on T57 (only two PHI leaders and Douglas Quaid already got a Great Prophet). This turn Seven got a 12 point score increase, so I'm presuming he bulbed an early tech. Not convinced that would have been better than an early Academy.

The Great Scientist bulb priority is...

Writing
Mathematics
Scientific Method
Physics
Education
Printing Press
Fiber Optics
Computers
Laser (BTS)
The Wheel
Alphabet (BTS)
Philosophy
Chemistry
Fission
Fusion
Optics
Paper
Astronomy
Biology
Electricity
Flight
Genetics
Compass
Satellites
Aesthetics (BTS)
Sailing
Alphabet (Vanilla & Warlords)
Calendar
Medicine
Ecology
Advanced Flight (BTS)
Iron Working
Metal Casting
Engineering
Steam Power
Liberalism
Agriculture
Masonry
Bronze Working
Machinery
Gunpowder
Refrigeration
Superconductors (BTS)
Rocketry
Fishing
Combustion
Plastics
Composites
Stealth (BTS)
Mining
Military Science (BTS)
Radio
Meditation
Drama
Theology
Music
Civil Service
Democracy
Corporation
Communism
Economics
Hunting
Archery
Animal Husbandry
Construction
Robotics
Monotheism
Mass Media
Horseback Riding
Replaceable Parts
Rifling
Artillery
Future Tech

...so I guess he must have bulbed Maths, since he'd need Writing to build the Libraries to hire the Scientists. That's not a play worth sacrificing an Academy for unless you have a plan. Maths increases chop yields, so I can only presume this is part of a Pyramids bid - which I said back before the game started was the clear wonder he'd be likely to focus on. I guess the Pyramids is better than an early Academy, but still... would have been nice to have both.
