So....Gandhi of France Anyone? (Leader/Civ Picking Thread)

Shoot, if your ok with Egypt you should go ahead and pick that IMO.

Done. Egypt was my first choice of civ for what it's worth (probably even over maya) so that worked out nicely! Did we really just get our top two leader choices and what I think were our top two civ choices?

Yep, weird huh? smile That said, I think there's 3 reasons we got pretty much exactly what we wanted.

1. LAM and Smackdown favoring the ORG/HRE & ORG/Sumeria combos, which we avoided
2. 4H picking slightly sub optimally (IMO, maybe they'll pull a LP on us and win spectacularly)
3. Even though we got our top 2 civs overall, we're the only team not to start with fishing, which is important for start 1. That may put us behind the growth curve a bit.

Will do a more detailed overview of the outcome of the snake pick once 4H and LAM pick their last leader.

So, assuming the starts given remain more or less the same outside of the plains forest we were promised, how should the opening be played?

Time to analyze the snake pick (Locke style):

1) Darius: Good choice. FIN leader paired with economic trait means all set up for mass teching. Teammate can cover expansion.

2) Bismark: Non-FIN leader for 2nd pick, strange. Decent leader with good traits but better options available for 2nd pick IMO.

3) HC: Good choice smile FIN leader along with IND with only 4 teams. Little synergy, but both traits are very strong.

4) Mehmed: Fairly poor pick. EXP is ok, but ORG is poor choice. Clearly chosen for ORG synergy with Sumeria with Darius gone, but leader still sucks.

5) Sumeria (+Mehmed): Really? Sumeria as 1st civ chosen? smoke Techs are good but UU is worse then normal axe and UB arriving earlier and slightly cheaper makes little difference. Better civs available even considering ORG synergy.

6) Maya (+HC): Great pick! smile Best non-India civ in the game that starts with Mining, excellent UB and alright UU.

7) Korea (+Bismark): Same starting techs as Maya, but much weaker civ. UU can't kill, UB is alright. England is much better overall, but Korea start with Myst which is necessary for Stonehenge. Still a decent Mining civ.

8) HRE (+Darius): UB pairs well with leader, but even though it's Immortal the synergy is overrated. Cost is worst starting techs in game, and fairly poor UU. May work out for them but big mountain to climb thanks to techs.

9) England (+Darius/HRE): Great choice. England is 2nd best Mining civ after Maya, and UU and UB are both decent.

10) N.America (+Bismark/Korea): Terrible civ. smoke Techs are ideal (Agri/Fishing) but everything else sucks. UU is not great and UB is comparable to PRO, which is a joke. Why not pick one of several good Agri/Wheel civs? This team clearly wants Stonehenge with free UB everywhere, Myst starting tech and best leader for it, but getting crappy results from snakepick thanks to it.

11) Gandhi (+HC/Maya): Fairly decent choice. Only SPI civ in game, and PHI is decent in teams and paired with SPI. No expansion traits hurts less on Immortal then lower difficulties. Probably better leaders available but not bad choice at all.

12) Elizabeth (+Mehmed/Sumeria): Pretty good FIN leader, but not with the picks this team already had. FIN wants mass expansion, but so does ORG Sumeria. PHI doesn't need mass expansion to be useful, but FIN does. Why not take Suleiman and support ORG Sumeria better? Otherwise pretty good pick.

13) Rome (+Mehmed/Elizabeth/Sumeria): Pretty decent Mining civ considering 4th pick. UU is powerful but no synergy with either Leader means useful for defense only. UB is worthless to PHI leader. Probably the best Mining civ left, should've taken Maya when they had the chance.

14) Egypt (+HC/Gandhi/Maya): Great pick! smile Awesome UU and UB synergies very well with Gandhi. Techs are very good aside from no fishing. Hard to go wrong with this.

15) Victoria (+Bismark/Korea/N.America): Decent pick. FIN leader paired with best expansion trait available. Could do much worse then to pick this.

16) Joao (+Darius/HRE/England): Great pick for last leader! smile 2 expansion traits combined means mass expansion. Paired with best teching leader means quite a combo. If they can get past bad start this combo will rock.

Someone else want to analyze the teams as a whole?

First techs will probably be Fishing -> BW -> Pottery. Then it depends on if we want to rush any wonders. Only question I have is where do we plan to throw AH in there?

We may want to start a new thread about that though, the pregame discussion is almost done.

Yeah, Mansa was still on the table. Maybe we should have just taken him instead, I wonder why we went Gandhi at all crazyeye

I'd do AH before Pottery. Start 1 isn't going to benefit from cottages much and for start 2 it's better to get those pastures up ASAP before worrying about cottaging our available land. By the time pottery comes in we'll either have more workers or we'll be ready to settle new cities, and that's when granaries would be put online.

lol

Speaking seriously though, looking at some of these combo's though I wonder if we overrated SPI and underrated expansion traits? Still pretty happy though, Gandhi of Egypt has the best synergy in the game (aside from the ORG UB courthouses), not to mention the fun factor.

From a pure growth perspective yes, however I have a feeling we're going to need to build a early wonder of some sort, and we need to be careful deciding which techs we need. AH is probably too important to delay, but something to consider.

If it's not too much trouble for him, I would like to ask Plako to change our colors. I hate both Egypt's yellow and Maya's cyan. I'd rather have two colors that are not often in the game, perhaps Red & Black?

I actually like Egypt and Maya's colours. Much prefer them to the 3 purple's we had in PB6.
