[SPOILERS] Oxy and suttree save the day, again!

It's funny, once I got back to a computer I came to the exact same conclusion. I already have half the micro on a google doc, so I can just give that to HBHR.

Team Dinosaurs - Whiteye / Raptorous England
Team Eagles & Condors - Kurumi / HBHR (with Oxyphenbutazone dedlurking) Native America

So,

Team Eagles & Condors are Pacal of Native America
Team Dinosaurs are Darius of England
Team Master and Margarita are Willem of the Ottomans
Team Bowsling / Aivoturso are Mansa of the Zulu
Team Orgynized are Huayana of the Netherlands
Team Blame Caledorn Isabella of the Inca
Team Care Bears are Victoria of India
Team Eggheads are Sury of Byzantium
Team My Little Marathon Cannibal Pony are Napoleon of Sumeria
Team Barteq/Haram are Ragnar of Rome

1. Team Eagles & Condors are Pacal of Native America

I think we did relatively well on the snake pick. With the first overall pick, our options were pretty limited between Pacal and India. Perhaps there are a few other legitimate civs/leaders to take with the first pick, but those were the only two we were considering prior to seeing the start. Obviously, once we saw the starting screenshot the choice became all too obvious. We only have one forest that can be chopped by a fast worker and we need three separate worker techs to hook up the food resources, which made India’s starting techs prohibitively bad. So that left Pacal, whose killer combination of Financial and Expansive traits gives excellent early and late game advantages.

On the way back, we made perhaps the more dubious decision of picking Native America. Native America is not the most flashy civ with just “ok” starting techs, a worthless UB and a good, but not great, UU. However, I think the pick was solid here. Suttree and I have determined Agriculture/Fishing to be the best starting techs for this start. In fact, we had to rule out many civs because of how particular this start has to be, the only other option we considered was Agriculture/Mining, or China. With Holland already taken and America… well America, the choice came down to Native America and China. Ultimately, we valued the choke-busting and rush-neutralizing power of the Dog Soldier over the Cho-ko-nu and the Pavillion. In addition, we still like Agriculture/Fishing over China’s techs. It didn’t hurt that picking Native America saved me a lot of work in redoing the microplan wink

As for our players, I think we’re an unproven bunch with a lot of potential. Sure three out of our five assembled dedlurkers and players are currently playing in PB11. However, of those players, two are doing very well and the other is… surviving. Yuri has played a number of solid games here at RB and has taken the habit of logging into every game he plays as “Yurimack,” which is sure to intimidate the enemy, irrespective of Mackoti’s affiliation with this team. HBHR is new to this site, but has significant experience with the diplo side of the game, which is a great boon to the otherwise all AI-diplo cast. And of course, his civ skills aren’t too shabby either smile

I’ll post the rest later. Don’t worry, they won’t be so long as I don’t have intimate knowledge of the thought process and players on the other teams wink

I think we'll get some value out of the totem pole. Some mediocre hybrid city to pump out garrison units perhaps? Guerrilla 2 archers for pillage fun?

This pick basically means the faster start we get from NA's starting techs is better than the culture bonus we get from Pavilions in the midgame. In a full diplo game, early warfare is rare, Dog Soldiers and Totem Poles are likely to be irrelevant unless we start next to Ragnar of Rome. As Pacal, we're quite happy to have no warfare throughout the game, and win by spaceship, so Cho-Ko-Nus were likely irrelevant as well. So it come down to starting techs vs. Pavilion bonus. I won't lie, I still prefer China - but as I said, it comes down to my gut feeling against your thorough testing - and gut feeling has no chance in this case smile

Looks like an undeserved compliment to me, but thank you smile

Can't be bothered to change the name in the connection screen every time, you know...

Depends on how much we need defenders - if we have plenty of land to expand, we can try to arrage NAPs and border agreements and run a token military for the first 100 turns. Full diplo is very abusable - let's abuse it!
