12 hours since first contact, so we need to get a draft of an intro up and running. Here's my attempt:
Quote:Greetings TEAM!
[Insert Standard Pleasantries]
Going to keep things short and to the point. Here's the information we're willing to share at this point:
- You guys are the first team we've met.
- Our capital is 16 West, 8 North of your own.
- The land between us is ridiculously rich. There are stone, furs, ivory, sugar, plains wheat, fish, and lots of riverside grassland directly to your northwest. The stone is closer to you than us, and we're honestly not that interested in Pyramids, not with Novice replaying PBEM17.
- We're not big on NAPs, and aren't interested in signing one this early. We trust you guys aren't the sort to go kamikaze and try to ruin our game with a worker snatch. That being said, if you do fuck with us we will drag you along with us to the depths of hell.
If you guys are interested in building a repore with us, please reciprocate with whatever information you're willing to part with. If not? Well, you got some free intel on us and we'll be on our merry way.
Cheers!
Dave
A bit unconventional, and if it was some other team I would not draft an email like this. I feel however, that with Krill, Lewwyn, Gaspar, we're going to want to shoot straight and keep the chaff to a minimum. They're all players that appreciate bluntness and don't like to screw around, so I feel something along these lines may be the best approach for them.
Still, I'm a pretty inexperienced hand at diplo, so I'd like to hear what everyone thinks. Fine with scrapping this entirely if that's the general sentiment.

Apologies, was meant light-heartedly. Deleted from the draft.

Oh it's fine. Reputations are like bad zits, try and get rid of them and they just ooze.
Oay, terrible analogy. But still, it's fine.

I dont think we should reveal the location of our capital, and inform them of our fertile land. Also, not sure if we should tell them that we dont want to settle near the stone. I think we should see what info they would want to share with us, before we give them information. But I havent done any civ diplomacy before, so might be off the mark.

Sorry, I've been a bit busy... Here is my draft, a slight alteration from Dave's:
Quote:Greeting, TEAM!
Sorry for the slight delay in responding. Work can be quite busy as all of you know.
We are very glad to have you as our neighbours. Interpret that any way you like...
Let's keep things short en to the point at this stage.
Here is the information we'd like to share with you.
- You guys are the first team we've met.
- The land we've scouted between us is very green and resource rich. Exactly the land you want to fight over.
- We're not big on NAPs, and aren't interested in signing one this early. We trust you guys aren't the sort to go kamikaze and try to ruin our game with a worker snatch. "That being said, if you do fuck with us we will drag you along with us to the depths of hell. (Dave quoted)"
We're interested in building up a nice and friendly information sharing relationship and hope to hear your thoughts on this soon.
Cheers,
Nakor

i like it - even the part where you quote davey. "Our captain is not to be fucked with!" but aside leaving open the idea of diplomacy.

Message from GES:
Quote:Team Pirate,
I am sure you will see several different modus operandi for diplo this game. Lord Parkin will likely send you novellas filled with self-congratulatory prattle and not so subtle sycophancy. With 7 & Kyan's team, I would generally suggest keeping a close hand on your wallet, because as they butter you up with hours of chat logs, they will be robbing you blind. Darrell's team, well, I suspect they won't be too bad to work with. But they have novice, which means if you get into any micro contest, you will likely come out on the short end.
And then there is us. Let's cut the BS. You want to win and we want to win. And no doubt, at some point, those purposes will be contradictory. But I would suggest that our teams should have extremely close diplomatic relations. I don't think either of us are probably fancied by the population at large as likely winners of the game. That lends us a great opportunity to work together, settle aggressively in the other direction, and generally work to put our teams in the most desirable situation late game, at which time we can simply duel it out from positions of strength.
You've seen my other games, and I have worked very closely with Luddite in the past. I can be trusted. I am glad to meet you guys first, because I told our team before this game even started that we should try to work with you guys from the start.
Anyway, Team TEAM is going to keep diplo as short and direct as possible. Most of us are too lazy for intensive Civ strategy talk, let alone useless diplo nonsense.

I would send off Nakor's draft as reply with two edits:
- Replace: "Let's keep...." with "We're of a similar mind when it comes to diplomacy.
- Delete: "We're very glad to have met you first...."
