I'm a little more ambivalent about barbs because counter play definitely exist for barbs. On the other hand, a few bad combat rolls vs barbs can really mess up one's game.

I agree with you on no huts/barbs for purely competitive games, but to a lesser degree on barbs. You want military anyway in case of an aggressive/rush neighbor. And farming barbs for 10xp to unlock the HE is a nice mini-game.
