Yeah, JC of the Aztecs take 2! Woo-hoo! Just what I always wanted....

I mean, it's a good combo, but I do not want to be playing the same combo in 2 different games at the same time...

I recently listened to Jesus Christ Superstar and instinctively read that as: "Jesus Christ of the Aztecs". That would certainly be interesting. rolf

What are you interested in playing? JC/Aztec is a strong combo. I see JC as one of the best leaders in RtR and to get a civ where the ORG pairing is useful is a bonus. I know you are doing this exact match already so there isn't much novelty but I have only played Aztec once and that was in the oddball industrial start game (pb33 I think) where the SAs really didn't come into play.

OTOH, this start is pretty unplayable for Aztec (Myst, Hunt). We would need Agriculture and Fishing, and we'd still be miles away from either chops (needing 2 techs) or granaries/cottages (still needing 2 techs).  shakehead  Let me know your thoughts on leader absent this civ.

As much as I said I wanted lighthouse fish, this is crab (-1F), there's no floodplains under it (so no +3f, yes I know I was never really going to get that), and seafood as a food resource is inherently problematic for the start, assuming starting techs don't otherwise hose you as we would be here.  nono

Well, JC is a great leader, and I think ORG is one of the best traits, simply becuase cheaper courthouses lets you build a lot of cities, and IMP obviously makes that strategy easier.

Ghandi would require some, uhh, finesse. We'd have to really try and leverage both traits, since neither provides an economic bonus as-is. We'd have to get an early religion. I played a spiritual leader in PB 38 and didn't found a religion or get a spread for a while and it made the trait less than useful. Also, my experience in 41 has changed my view on PHI leaders. Bulbs are useful and all, but Golden Ages are a better way to utilizing the great people that PHI can get us.

So overall, with some luck and planning I think that Ghandi can be a stronger leader than JC, but JC is stronger by itself. IE: JC will be strong no matter how we play, whereas Ghandi requires a certain playstyle.

Targeted bulbs are very good. Astronomy comes immediately to mind. PHI gets you there sooner than anyone else and can provide a critical window that can't be matched by non-PHI civs. Liberalism race too. Identifying which bulbs you have to target is key. But overall, I agree. PHI for golden ages is the stronger play. I think my last game with PHI was pb18 and I had 6 golden ages, including Taj. That was certainly a boost.

With Ghandi, though, SPI is very intriguing to me. Ghandi is the more interesting leader to play, by far. But will I have time to micro sufficiently to fully utilize the trait? I'm not sure. Maybe. Summer is coming and my job slows down and that's where I play most of my turns so I will probably be able to dedicate a good chunk of time to getting it right. More importantly, can we build Mids? In PB41 I got screwed hard by not having stone so I never had a chance for Mids. SPI without Mids is not nearly as powerful. I'd guess that with a newbie mapmaker we're more likely than not to have a lush map and everyone have access to stone/marble.

Then there is expansion to consider. Expansion/growth is painfully slow without any expansion traits. This was my pb38 experience (AGG/CHM) and I struggled to keep up in expansion with my 3 IMP neighbors. Not having religion and paying full price for buildings as well as expansion made for a miserable experience. Will we have time to slot in religion needing agriculture, fishing, mining? Depending on how our civ reroll goes this could be an issue and a factor against Ghandi. The biggest factor for me though is that new mapmakers tend to like lush maps and that's a big point in favor of IMP.

All things considered, I am comfortable going with Caesar. I am confident that I can make a fast expansion start work and transition that into a comfortable position in the midgame. I am less confident that all factors will line up for the higher upside Ghandi play to work as well.

Final thoughts? I'm inclined to keep Caesar at this point.

Yeah, I'd say that Caesar is the better choice overall, and he goes with pretty much any civ.

Keep Caesar.

Well now that you have chosen Julius Caesar. How about the

Celts

I know for a fact that they worked together in the past. wink

Myst/Hunting again... wonderful.

I like the Celts well enough but those starting techs just don't work for me.
