Is that character a variant? (I just love getting asked that in channel.) - Charis

[Spoilers] REM and AdrienIer's thread of football, spamming and blaming it on the mod

Yeah our 2nd city will already be further than most of the 2nd cities I usually settle, settling on GJ's border on turn ~35 would, in addition to delay our settlement, piss him off pretty badly and we can be sure we'll have immediate retribution. If it's our 3rd city he might not be as enraged about it. If it's our 4th it actually makes sense, we'd settle reasonable cities towards the east with only one city to defend in the end. I'll probably have more to say in the morning once I take a look at the game.

I'm not sure where to move Messi and Webb, should they go S SW and S respectively ?

I'm in actually, I just noticed you were in 20mn ago...

Sorry I was just sending a few pbems off. I moved the non contentious items; the worker, netted the food and ronaldo.

Pretty uninviting down there, although the deer could make that tundra silver work... however I think it may be better just to give that barren ice city 2 food. I think ronaldo should finish scouting down there, make it up to that plains hill to make sure we aren't missing any other landmasses and then he should move to pick up the hut we saved.

The other 2 chaps I didn't move as to they will likely move to be hit by barbs. Webb will probably be hit by the wolf if we move him south, but I think land information down there is more important than keeping the free win. The other thought I had with him is to move to poke around GJ. I know he won't get there for like 15 turns but it will be a hassle for him and if it disrupts his micro then good. We are clearly not going to have good relations with GJ team soon so we might as well benefit from it!

Messi I think should go to where the lion was last turn. It is likely we will have to use up our free win here. I think that hugging the coast and seeing what is east of GJ is key to our plans. If he has a land neighbour to his east we can be more measured in taking that plains hill spot near him as he does not have one direction that he needs to claim land in. I think this will be the best info that he can give us atm.

What are your thoughts?

Depending on what's in the fog we might want to use the deer to make the silver city not-too-aweful, but if there's any other food resource in the fog the deer should go with the crab to make a semi useful city in the west.
I moved Webb south (no screen because of no defogging) and Messi S SW :

The lion will probably hit us next turn but even if the wolf hits the warrior first and uses the free win we have good odds.

We could send Webb east after scouting the tundra, we'll see how much he can do once he gets there.

My temporary tech plan : wheel myst poly hunting archery then Sailing/AH in some order (for chariots, archers are a bit weak as an early defense...). I don't like to postpone pottery so much but I don't see how we could tech it before any of those.

That's such a horrible early tech path but I don't see what else we can do with it atm. Only thing is we could perhaps settle there fourth if GJ has a lot of viable land around him to the east which is also under contention making locking us in not a priority. That way we could go on the plains hill 3rd and use is as a hammer site staying at size 1 and pumping 9fh per turn into workers... That way we can skip archery and settle there with an axe/spear, although we would still need to actually build that axe spear before settling there.

My other concern is if they use the new swordsmen to good effect. An agg sword is strength 9.6 on attacking cities without any promos. That would give an axe on the hill 5 v 6.6, which is terrible odds. Even with fortification it would only reach 6.25 v 6.6, and with promos it is only worse as combat 1 is out performed here by city raider 1 (or shock). Thank god they didn't take Rome! I fear we would have to build walls to make a defense viable... frown

Actually you're wrong about combat odds, an agg sword attacking an axe on the hill would be 6 vs 5*1.15=5.75. I made a description of the odds system in Cornflaks' thread in PBEM 61, if you want I can send you a spoiler-free version of it here. You're right about Rome, they're buffed with the mod IMO : 7 +50% against cities vs 8 is not a bad trade and +10% GPP for the UB is nice.

You're half right there - I forgot to add the hill defence bonus. You haven't added the full 25% though. It would come out at 6.25 v 6.6 without fort, or 7.5 v 6.6 with full fortification. That has relieved me a bit, but only a bit. Have a look at these tests. All run assuming an agg sword vs a fully fortified axe...

Whilst they are better than I hoped, they aren't exactly great for a 1v1 defending a city, only getting 67% odds. Slightly better with about 75% odds with any culture bonus but it isn't much still.

Would we really want to only defend with an axe ? First in a situation like this (just one axe against a swordsman) we have better chances attacking out, where our odds are really good and he doesn't get +50%. Second he's more likely to whip 2 chariots and destroy us once he gets AH (he'll have it much earlier than IW). Third I think we should maybe rush him ourselves, I've been wondering for some time if it would be better to just whip 2 chariots of our own (he probably won't have copper assuming the one we see is his only one) and attack him. That would mean going AH soon, and thinking about it I wouldn't want that unless hinduism falls before we're halfway through myst. If we can't land an early religion our only option is to make an early kill to secure us more land.
