It makes REXing over dominant. Why build cottages when you can just work more gems and gold? The map-maker gets beaten up less this way? 200 lurker posts and no philosophical arguments that have no bearing on the game? I'm in! He also has no second city yet, as one would expect, having dumped 150 presumably unmodified hammers into The Oracle. Anyone think that we should ask 'Nyles' if he'd ever consider going wonder before Settler,...or if he's done it before? Agree and sympathize with the mapmaker's challenge. (September 18th, 2015, 19:33)GermanJoey Wrote: The "free" commerce tiles are also there, as wetbandit says, get the game jump-started a bit faster, but there's another ~secret~ reason for them too. First of all, each player only has one such resource nearby (silver/gems/gold) that's not covered by jungle. Everyone's explored a fair bit now so I think its ok to spoil that. So, that's not too extreme - a single gold isn't enough to drive an entire economy. The big thing is actually the jungled copies. They're actually there to compensate for something else, something that players usually take for granted but so far only two players have noticed is missing. I'm not sure that I understand given my light following of this game. Without knowing exactly what you're saying, I still like this as a lurker since it pushes IW and swords earlier for more blood. (September 19th, 2015, 04:18)The Black Sword Wrote: Cities are just so cheap in these PB18 style games, with a huge map and cylindrical maintenance, that it's pretty much always a good idea to build another one. It's not the only choice, but whenever you're in doubt you can't go too wrong with choosing the REX option. That's why I like Toroidal maintenance, it makes those decisions a lot more interesting IMO. You need a plan to fund your expansion. What TBS said. Plus the combination of really lush land + increased per city bonuses (Merc) + increased/earlier tile bonuses might make the snowball roll a little too fast. I guess KTB helps there. I might just be thinking PB25 where there aren't enough players for KTB to matter. I don't really want to slam the guy but HAK doesn't seem to calculate rate of return. We discussed this stuff nearly endlessly in PB25 (me catching him building zero return stuff ALL.THE.TIME.) but for whatever reason a 120H forge is better than a 100H settler that's gobbling up high yield tiles. I'm biting my tongue until it hurts. Your head would explode if you read that thread. It was about T90 that HAK asked a question that made it clear that he didn't understand the mechanics of the whip. Things got a bit better after that was cleared up. Yes, I strongly advocated for long-term investments. Investments like choke-points and removal of foreign cities from *our* landmass. You probably wouldn't approve.
Dang mindy, now im curious to read that thread too! I thought you were a guy who figured blood could solve most problems. A position I celebrate as a lurker!

I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.
