[SPOILERS] PB20 Lurker Thread of Perfect Hindsight

I'll take it from a less specific angle then. When you're not in a position to win the game and are just playing for fun, as opposed to trying to buy enough time to maybe be able to win or whatever.... Why would you ever pay tribute to another player? You wouldn't vassal yourself (I hope, anyway). If someone wants all your stuff, make them take it from you. Period. In doing so they may find the cost not to their liking and you likely won't have some other bully looking at you licking his chops asking for the same kind of "protection" money. Plus, I don't find it fun to give freebies away at the point of a gun. We're not talking about real life where that would be the sensible thing to do. Play for fun, play to win, and don't pay the bully. You can take it from my cold, dead hands.

Played: Pitboss 18 - Kublai Khan of Germany Somalia | Pitboss 11 - De Gaulle of Byzantium | Pitboss 8 - Churchill of Portugal | PB7 - Mao of Native America | PBEM29 Greens - Mao of Babylon

Hey, I wouldn't pay it either. I'm just saying that, as far as I've seen, mack does seem to stick to his agreements.

...if it profits him.

And to expand on that a bit, it usually does. He's very skilled; "heads I win, tails you lose" situations are made, not stumbled into.

in PB13 he kept posting over and over again how he regretted his end-game NAPs, but still stuck by them...

I suspect Mack wrote most of those posts with an audience of future competitors in mind.

To be clear, I was pointing out the humerous irony of the timing of the two posts, not trying to open a discussion.

But for me, it comes down to a mix of what approach benefits me and/or my civ the most. For example, in the demogame I sold cities for a NAP, because it was best for my civ, even though it was worse for my personal life (in the end, I felt I had a duty to the civ). But its a complicated question - if the same was possible for me to pay off Oxy in PBEM 52(? Whatever number), I wouldn't do it, because I would rather fight to the death over my own civ/a general desire to have some war in such a passive game, even if its worse for my civs survival.

But yeah, in Gawzdak's position I might well give the money - paying off a rival with massive army, close by when you're quite vulnerable and have a greater chance of winning for doing so? Seems reasonable. Depends on your disposition/chances of winning and so on, but if I thought I had a chance and it would increase if I payed them off? If I didn't, I'd a) probably want to die and b) not want to hurt the fame for others, so I wouldn't, but I get Gawzdaks motive.

I find it very ironic how much Mackoti is complaining about his position when he has been in the lead for most of the game, including the early game with his "bad" starting position. Compared with Seven's start lacking copper, he's had a much easier time of it.

Yeah, he also got a very quick two-stage conquest. The game hasn't exactly been cruel to him.

How much do you think Retep would have paid Mack to take Haram out first? wink
