Status update: Jowy offered white peace which I accepted. Later, Dreylin landed a settling party on the southeast island and founded a city which was immediately crushed by Rabies's culture. Writing this now, I realize I really should have taken that as a red flag, but at the time I just thought he was claiming unsettled land. Probably didn't help that I chopped both forests next to his city.
A few turns later Dreylin surprised me with a villainous invasion! Probably not so surprising considering he's #2 in the world and I'm one of the losers, but I certainly wasn't happy about it. He brought up several Frigates and Galleons to bombard Rabies and a mixed force of Cuirs/Cats/Axes/Muskets(?).
There wasn't much I could do about this since Rabies was isolated and Dreylin is many techs ahead of me, but I upgraded units to Rifles and tried to hold Rabies anyway. Unfortunately, with Dreylin having Frigate and my still running around with Triremes, it soon dawned on me that he had pretty much unrestricted access to my southern coast, which was basically undefended. So I accepted his next offer of peace for Rabies.
I feel a little guilty about giving Jowy so much resistance then caving to Dreylin after a turn, but I have no defense against his navy. He could easily raze my coastal cities and there's not too much I can do to stop that right now. I'm going to tech to Steel and Astronomy for Cannons and Frigates; Chemistry is 2t away and I'm halfway through Optics so I should be able to get there in 10 turns. Once I have those techs, I might just turn off science forever and build military until the end of time. We'll see!
