So I open the save and I send my Warrior south, Scout north. I instantly regret sending the scout north because I find ice. Whereas the Warrior finds grassland:
First thing I did was change my name to Grand Chief Lewwyn. Seriously did no one else think of that?
This picture shows what I'm dealing with. Unfortunately, I have to settle in place. I have to assume that all of my opponents have similar starts with resources and improved tiles. Now to be frank, I really dislike that. To take advantage of these improvements I must settle here in the barren waste of the plains. This city will never be as cool as a grassland river area. If I chose to move my settler south to grab some of the grassland I have no guarantee that I will be able to farm that grass anyway. Additionally, I'd lose the metamagic node that is in the north.
Lurker Question:
-So is a metamagic node good? What sort of spells is it used for? Will I want to use those spells?
Back to the topic at hand. If I don't settle in place I put myself far, far behind in terms of initial growth because I would need to build a worker. for improvements and tech worker techs. As it currently stands I need neither. I will build warriors until size 4-5 and then build settlers. No need for workers yet since everything is improved. I won't need workers until I get a second city. Thus no worker techs either. I will be able to tech straight to Myst and God King. Then using my EXP bonus + God King I can throw out a settler maybe two.
An additional reason I do not particularly like this start is that it speeds up everyone. Now my EXP trait should give me an advantage either way, but to be honest I think that early game micro is one of my strengths. This start robs me of the chance to get a lead based on possibly stronger early turn micro. Now there is no need to make choices between warriors and workers, no need to worry about tech choices. Less chance for my opponents to make a mistake.
If I sound like I'm complaining... I probably am. But I think for my first FFH PBEM game I would have liked a more natural map before we got to a sped up pre-placed improvement start. I wouldn't be as disappointed if it wasn't my first game. But, I will roll with the punches, what goes up must come down, only I go back up again...
Just thought about something though... If Kurioates have the same start then that will be a gigantic nerf with 2nd being plains and 3rd rings not looking much better.
Ended turn, barbs moved:
Here, wolfy, wolfy wolf!
We also have the roster completed. I'm going out in a bit though so I'll make some (inexperienced, uneducated) comments about both my opponents and their civ/leaders. That should be fun for all you pro FFHers.
