MMk, that solves that.

So we have 7 players now.... I guess time to send me preference lists? and then I'll get the subforum set up?

How good the different countries are is effected by the role set. For example Russia suffers greatly in a no-press game. So we have to determine the rules before moving on.

I want, to as close as possible,:

Full Diplomacy rant

Oh, I had been thinking along the lines of a standard game. Full diplomacy, no variants, that sort of thing

What is the "rego assignment system", do we need to send full-preference sets? Or just our most preferred country? Or some number in between?

Oh sorry, yes, I'd like preference lists. They can be full or partial, up to you.

And fyi, I have not ran or played a diplomacy game before, just read through games being played, so I'm still getting up to speed on all of this too. Sorry for any problems that might cause. smoke

This is the way I've seen it done

http://www.diplom.org/Zine/F1998M/Tarzan/assign.html

(Method 2, Variation A)

Each player submits a Preference List to the GM. "Partial" and "grouped" Preference lists are NOT permitted.
The "top-most" choice (only) from each player's Preference List is considered simultaneously:
As many players as possible are given their "top-most" choice.
If the same power is listed as the "top-most" choice for more than one player, then this power is randomly assigned to one of these players.
All assigned powers are now crossed off from the players' Preference Lists.
This process is repeated until all players have been assigned a power.

Hmm, too late for the sign-ups, it appears. Still, I'd love to dedlurk if anyone wants one.
Merovech's Mapmaking Guidelines:
0. Player Requests: The player's requests take precedence, even if they contradict the following guidelines.

1. Balance: The map must be balanced, both in regards to land quality and availability and in regards to special civilization features. A map may be wonderfully unique and surprising, but, if it is unbalanced, the game will suffer and the player's enjoyment will not be as high as it could be.

2. Identity and Enjoyment: The map should be interesting to play at all levels, from city placement and management to the border-created interactions between civilizations, and should include varied terrain. Flavor should enhance the inherent pleasure resulting from the underlying tile arrangements. The map should not be exceedingly lush, but it is better to err on the lush side than on the poor side when placing terrain.

3. Feel (Avoiding Gimmicks): The map should not be overwhelmed or dominated by the mapmaker's flavor. Embellishment of the map through the use of special improvements, barbarian units, and abnormal terrain can enhance the identity and enjoyment of the map, but should take a backseat to the more normal aspects of the map. The game should usually not revolve around the flavor, but merely be accented by it.

4. Realism: Where possible, the terrain of the map should be realistic. Jungles on desert tiles, or even next to desert tiles, should therefore have a very specific reason for existing. Rivers should run downhill or across level ground into bodies of water. Irrigated terrain should have a higher grassland to plains ratio than dry terrain. Mountain chains should cast rain shadows. Islands, mountains, and peninsulas should follow logical plate tectonics.
