Is that character a variant? (I just love getting asked that in channel.) - Charis

[SPOILERS] scooter Expands the Empire Across the Sea

I don't think it's a crazy idea at all. In a world where the game is all about Astronomy, the bottleneck is Scientist generation, and MoM inherently makes that easier.

Also, the timings for it are better than you'd think. Next turn is 106. I checked in-game, and Calendar would take me roughly 5T to tech - so around T110 or so. Maybe 6T. I eyeballed the Aren settler, and it could plant on the Marble on I think T111 if I counted correctly. The settler completes this coming turn (106), so I have one more turn to consider the idea.

Glad the idea has some merit. smile Of course we won’t have OR and we won’t have lumbermills yet if we go through with it, so our Marble city will suck for a while. The city might have to chop a monument and suffer. Not sure.

I approve of this "Our MoM" shenanigans. The downside if it fails isn't that large either.

If we do this I definitely think we go for MC after Calendar. We will not want to revolt for OR while we are building MoM, and may want to revisit our plans for getting into OR based on the possibility of an upcoming GA. So I’m not sure when we would want to go Monotheism-Monarchy but it would have less priority in the short term, and getting MC for defense (plus lumber mills & forges) would make the most sense next after Calendar.

Do we have graphs including Yuris yet? It's been a while since you've showed them (T098).

So remember how I mentioned players in this game may not understand trade routes very well and thus I was hesitant to arrange pay-per-OB deals?

I have no idea why he thinks I would agree to this. This came after I signed OB with Cairo. As a result, SD's routes on their own were worth like 4c this past turn. I ignored. This past turn he asked for 15gpt instead of 10. Ignored again. I assume he'll cancel at some point, but sorry, there's no world in which this is worth it. I'd consider it for 2gpt. My Cothon Math was assuming no international routes at all.

Prepping for a MoM build. Library is setup to whip in some overflow, and I can do the same with this Market build. The Furs are online in 2T hence some of the unhappiness you see. In general I'm planning to convert that pop to MoM production here shortly, so it's just the cost of doing business.

This city is going to suck for awhile, but I think it's worth it. Also adding the WineMine for Unta's ability to max-hammer things out. And by things I mean one particular Thing.

This city is going to be A Problem thanks to Creative. I'm going to have to get some culture into these front cities. Or just burn it. lol

One observation - it's occurring to me that I may simply have less land than most players. SD for example is more or less even with me on cities and I believe has more land tiles, but he and Yuris still have a Double Fish island (!!) to fight over. For me, there's really no more contested land available. I'll get a few more cities for sure, but none that really expand my footprint. However, with Calendar completing soon, a couple of these unclaimed spots of mine are about to become more useful at least.

(Also no, I don't have graphs on Yuris yet thanks in part to SD spending past the EP limit on me for no reason. Few more turns for that.)

Yeah, after Calendar I think we consider going straight via MC & Machinery to Optics. We don’t want to depend on other peoples’ open borders to maximize our routes, and we want the ability to build up a defensive navy — with an eye to getting navally offensive if need be. Crossbows will really help our defenses too. Longbows would be nice, but since most of our front line cities are on flat land they are only modestly better than crossbows, and less good against maces which are the attacker we’d be most expecting.

I am not familiar with the mod, what do Cothons actually do?
Reply

Cothons are a Harbour replacement that add a trade route in addition to the +50% to trade route income & health benefits harbours normally have. The trade route is a big deal, and the trade modifier combines well with Protective and circumnavigation (in this mod) to make all domestic trade routes worth as much as International ones, barring Custom Houses (which are late game & very expensive). Normally harbours are not worth much but for our empire, we get big discounts to build them and extra benefits for doing it, so for us they’re awesome and we want them everywhere ASAP.

Thanks Zed-F. What is the synergy with circumnavigation, is that also different from the +1 move it normally gives?
