This. The interior lines of defense playbook works just fine until Astronomy, when galleons will move faster (4) than the defenders (3). And, there is the issue of units coming in out of the fog and then having to scramble to cover. But, pindicator's other point is also spot on. Far better to just defend on the seas and utilize the natural +10% defensive bonus.

Considering our lower potential maritime production capacity, does this mean we should give higher priority to Optics/Astronomy/etc. so we can start building more advanced naval units earlier?

Honestly, when I read this thread, I hear the Benny Hill music in my head.
1) Nobody has any naval technology
2) Rifling is more important
3) Military Tradition is more important
4) Communism is more important
5) We don't have any important naval cities on the CFC border anyways.

Well, this is the long-term planning thread and war seems somewhat likely if not immediately on T175.

Oh boy, more out of hand dismissals from Speaker and Sullla. Who would have guessed?

Hm? I agree with every one of these points, it's hardly an out of hand dismissal:

I thought the discussion in this thread was kind of bizarre so I mostly ignored it, but I don't think navy is a huge concern for us right now. CFC isn't really close to Astro, and until they are this is pretty much a moot point. There's a lot of techs out there that are way better for us than Astro anyway, so why would be put off an uber-tech like Communism in order to have extreme control over the ice islands?

Agreed with Speaker and scooter.
I have to run.

Speaker, "give higher priority to" doesn't mean "beeline." Obviously we want those live-or-die techs first. Second, there's no need to be rude. A simple "no, our maritime assets aren't really under threat and we have higher tech priorities (X, Y, Z)" would have been more than adequate answer to my query (see scooter's post).
However, I do enjoy listening to that song.

Well, planning to turn a specific coastal city into a production focused one rather than a commerce focused one has nothing to do with teching astronomy before rifling/communism. It's more about deciding what to do with the workers working on the coastal cities rather than deciding what to tech next (and what to build in these cities, if a library or market will be worth the spent hammers). It seems people are discussing two different things here.

To be clear, I wasn't arguing for altering our tech path either. All I was arguing for was tilting our development of coastal cities towards production over the next 30 turns or so, because given the land, it's not something we can make happen fast in an emergency scenario. If other people think it's a non-issue, then I'll try not to worry about it.
I'll let it drop now.
