[SPOILERS] joey and scooter's thread: FUN THINGS ONLY

Hmmmm.......... with PB22 slowing down, I've been thinking about this game more... and I think my tech plan from Monday is just, like, the flat-out the wrong moves to stay competitive in this thing. (competitive for finishing Top 5, at least, heh) According to my "cost of Vassalage" equation from PB22, switching from Bureau to Vassalage in this game will cost 126ecpt (effective commerce per turn, i.e. commerce after its gone through libraries, markets, etc) and 4hpt, which is just obscenely expensive... and that's without considering Oxford, which I'll be starting soon in Zoo! It would be cheaper to grind up another 150XP than to spend that much money for the rest of the game.

Doing some calculations for State Property makes it lose some luster too:

1.) First, the food bonus. I'm working like, at most maybe 50 workshops/watermills, which would be +50 fpt. Nothing to sneeze at, sure, but then I don't actually have any new tiles to grow onto in most of my cities, either. So that's really like +25 specialists, gained slowly, in cities without good multipliers... at best, we can say +50hpt here, purely working engineers. With rep, we're talking about 50hpt + 75bpt.
2.) I'm making 510 hpt across my empire right now. So, at best the +10% hammer bonus would net me +50hpt again, although its probably more like 35-40hpt due to rounding and what not.
3.) My total distance-from-palace expenses are, despite having zero courthouses, only 97 gpt, believe it or not. Inflation is at 32% so that's 128gpt.

Optimistically, that's 128gpt, 75bpt, and 100hpt. Is that actually better than ~280gpt, which is about what I'm getting from Free Market? Hard to say... probably. Is it better enough than Free Market to justify 15000 beakers spent to get it? Hell no, not in a game like this.

Next, what about all those military techs? Do I want West Point? Yes, but does it do any good without the ability to get Commandos? No. Do I want Military Science? Yes, but only to enable the Commando Promotion and Grenadiers, the former of which is really only useful with West Point and Vassalage (or another GG) AND the era of railroads, and the latter of which is only necessary if TBS gets rifling, like, within the next few turns. If he goes for Rifling, I could get it immediately, otherwise I can skip it. Ships of the Line are particularly unnecessary I think, as I haven't seen any significant navy out of anyone. I probably have more+bigger ships than TBS+CH+plako+dazed+xenu+bacchus+HAK+yuris+AT combined. Finally, Rifling. Well, I sure do want that but... do I really need it immediately? It's a hard question because Infantry are right around the corner, just 2 techs after RP since I already have Chemistry and Corp. If I can stay safe until then, my GA could be used to bring up factories and coal plants everywhere (hey, I just remembered that I'm expansive, so no health problems!) and then, most importantly, secure the free GG from Fascism, allowing me to produce Commandos without switching Zoo away from Bureaucracy. It's a hell of a lot more risky but goddamn would it put me in a stronger position than my other plan. If all goes well, we could be looking at Commando Paratroopers in 25-30 turns... how do you lurkers like that? [Image: alvRGED.gif]

I'm so glad I have research visibility on TBS, that has totally been EP well spent. I think what I should do is get RP next turn, and then start saving oodles of gold. If I see him start to tech Rifling, then I tech Rifling too, and I can match rifles with rifles and cavs with cavs if he wants to fight. Otherwise, I'll just save gold until I can get Steam Power and Assembly Line back to back, pretty much.

Love the analysis. Pretty cool how a game this big makes some of the overlooked strats and first-to bonii worthwhile. How much gold would you need to blast thru both of those?

Hmmm, a lot, although maybe not as much as you'd think. This loan offer I just got, when I logged in again to check tech costs, should help:

I asked him to throw in sugar (which I'm currently buying from him at 10 gpt, WW got me really desperate for happys frown), and I don't think he'll refuse as long as he gets his money. That nets me +250 gold off a 500 gold loan, a pretty solid rate IMHO. I don't know what on earth he's beelining that he needs this money for, but I bet its not Fascism so I don't really care! Go get your great spy or great scientist or whatever!!! Just keep your grubby paws the hell away from my bundle of sticks, thanks!!

Anyways, how much gold do I need for my great general? Good question. Let's break it down... We start with looking at the assorted tech costs for PB18:

Code:
[b]Tech: Beakers (civs with tech)[/b]
RP: 4657 (9)
Rifling: 7245 (?)
Liberalism: 3622 (1)
Steam Power: 9660 (0)
Assembly Line: 17250 (0)
Scientific Method: 8280 (0)
Military Science: 6037 (1)
Steel: 8452 (1)
Communism: 9660 (0)
Fascism: 8280 (0)
Military Tradition: 5175 (8)
Flight: 17250 (0)

So, so get to Assembly Line, I need RP, SP, and AL, which cost in total:

Code:
AL + SP + RP = 17250 + 9660 + 4657 = 31567 total beakers

However, there's prereq and KTB bonuses, so the actual cost is lower. (assuming I'm first to AL (probably won't happen) but not first to steam power (likely, as there's 9 other civs with RP).

Code:
abAL = (17250/1.2/1.00) + (9660/1.2/1.08) + (4657/1.2/1.72) = 24085 raw beakers

Assuming that I have the gold, this will take just over 11 turns to research.

Now, how much gold do I need and how long will it take me to get it? Assuming my estimate of 2100 beakers per turn is accurate, that means that for every 600 gold I get 2100 beakers. Translating that:

Code:
abAL*600/2100 = 24085*600/2100 = 6882 gold.

I should gain around ~1300 gpt starting next turn, and I'll be starting with 1050 gold, between what I get from the loan and what I have left over from Corp:

Code:
(6882 - 1050)/1300 = 4.48 turns of saving gold

I'll probably save for 4 turns then turn on the jets; I'll get some gold out of Gawdzak last couple cities and can probably score a loan if I really need it. A slightly better KTB would help too, and I could always queue a few research/wealth builds to put me over the top.

Once I have AL I will start my GA, and my hope is that my tech rate will be high enough to blast through Facism and Rifling in a total of 3 turns, maybe with some loans if I need 'em. So... that's what, 18 more turns with just Jans, Knights, and Catapults to defend myself? Will TBS let me live with just that??? Probably not... in all likelihood, I'll be forced to get Rifling early and delay the GA a bit... and THEN I'll have to backfill all kinds of various Ren junk, blugh, before I can work towards Flight.

It seems that, after calculating all this out, I was a bit optimistic on my Commando paratrooper timing. Maybe 25-30 turns actually means more like 50 turns from now? smile Still, something to look forward to.

I turned out to be just short of my projections wrt corp; my income is about ~2070 bpt / ~1275gpt. Still pretty good!

More spite from Gawdzak; he pulled out of the city at the last minute to hole up in Sardis, which is on a hill. rolleye He's actually got more troops than I do now, at least numerically - something like 15 muskets, 8 longbows, 2 spears and a warrior. I'll need to wait for heavy reinforcements to avoid another Susa.

I also popped another silver!

RP at break-even in 2 turns; couldn't go binary w/ it because BGN has yet to respond to the loan re-offer.

Mmm, might have just got caught with my fingers in the cookie jar...

I've been very carefully been putting 1 turn into a road in a few select tiles in TBS' empire, 5 tiles total now over the last 9 turns despite having a half dozen workers crawling around the eastern part of his empire. However, what I didn't count on is that he'd actually put a road himself on one of the tiles that I did too... I wonder if he noticed that his road was done with just 1 worker turn? And I wonder if this will escalate his concerns about me? He's moved a smallish stack of cuirs a bit further away form my border, splitting it into two 5 cuir stacks. In response, I moved my two stacks one tile back as well.

Gawdzak declared war on TBS and Krill last turn... I wonder what happened? He was able to upgrade his warrior and all three spears, and now has 900 in the bank... perhaps he requested a loan from them, but then backed out of the repayment plan? I have no idea.

A random funny thing this turn is that TBS and I have exactly identical gold-saving rates, +1393 gpt.

All's been quiet, for the most part... my GA and AL still due on T200.

I've got about 50 units staring down 28 in Persia's last city, but some sim results show that I can still only barely take it, taking heavy losses (beyond just cats) in the process. frown I want to just get this ordeal the hell over with but I don't want to seem weak on the power graphs, either, while I'm still gambitting for AL and beyond. The city's been whipped down to size 4 now, so I think he'll top off at 30 units at most. If I wait another 5 or 6 turns, I can reinforce my stack with another 6 cats and 6 jans.

Another factor here is that AT and Yuri will come to a climactic fight either this turn or next, and I'd like to bite off at least a small piece of Yuri if I can. His now-capital of Maastricht was empty this turn, but I won't take it until he's got a fair chance to defend himself against AT. Yuri's got close to 20 units on hand, including a CG3 C2 GG Musket, but only 15 were in the city. AT's got maybe 25 units on hand, although his big-hitter praets are at least 3 turns away from being able to attack.

Steam Power is due in 2 or 3 for me, depending on how much of a boost I get from KTB when TBS finishes it at EOT. By the way, I'm at ~2400bpt now at -600ish gpt. I think I can finish the next end of next turn, but it might take a few research builds... it'd be nice to start on my Levees sooner than later.
