When last we left our hero, the Chosen One, he had just been very firmly but very forcefully shown the exit and kicked back into an alien infested wasteland.
Things looked bleak for our hero, he was surrounded by Aliens, Deathclaws and Supermutants. But if there was one thing a life growing up in Alpha Complex had prepared him for

... it was running away.
Again and again he managed to [strike]run from[/strike] outflank his alien pursuers.
In his travels he met the first representatives of an odd race called the Elohim... but ran on before exchanging more than curt introductions.
And wandering through the desert, alone, barely conscious, he stayed alive.
The Vault Dwellers were still kicking themselves.
They'd found and lost the waterchip in that embarrassing incident with the ghoul and the deck of cards, and the 20G in loot they'd managed to raise wasn't nearly enough to satisfy their Runes handler.
But maybe this would buy them a ticket back to the complex? A prime fishing location.

Look at it, fantastic. Fish, coastal pearls, room for multiple pirate coves... And the land! Marble. Forested ice hills. Much valuable raw materials. And obviously someone would easily be able to think of some fishing application for marble soon enough.
But out of the fog, they heard voices.
Green voices.
The Vault Dweller team knew better than to get involved with Clearance Green. Time to scarper!
In the immediate vicinity of Hex base Captain Flashman (Hero of Alpha Complex) lamented his lot in life, and the improbable sequence of events that had led to his being selected to head up a recon team.

He was clearance blue! There was no reason for any of the blue-bloods to get involved in out of complex activities. It set a bad precedent.
But after getting in that duel with Card-I-GAN, and having his hormone suppressants removed by that high programmer, it seemed like it might actually be the least hazardous course of action to be out of complex for a while.
Maybe it would bolster his reputation as a blunt and effective hero of the computer even further... Maybe he would find the fabled "El Fishrado" which could get him promoted all the way up to Violet.
Didn't stop it from being a cold and miserable job though.
