PBEM 7 - Team Contest (4 x 2) - discussion

I would say each continent gets 3 CSs so we can have the inspiration for PP. With 8 players, we should do at least a standard size map and I believe 12 CSs is the default. We could kick it up to Large (is that the next size up?) if we want a little more room to expand. I guess I would like to test map size a little. I would like to have room for 10 cities per player plus the CSs, especially if the continents aren't connected by coastal tiles (which might be another thing to discuss).

Ok, I am fine with leaving this at

- 8 players
- The suggestion to have each team on a continent with 3 CS is great in my mind. At least it won't depend on luck whether teams get PP inspiration.
- each team chooses from 2 old and 2 DLC civs (DLC 7 + scythia?) ?
- each team to have an experienced player and a new player. I would be fine with Japper/Mike and the rest being drawn.

We still have quite a bit of time to fine tune this, so testing of standard map versus large map might be a good idea. Maybe a large map with high water level or standard map with low water level?

who is going to help us with the map?

I'm open to random teams (or newbie+vet selected randomly) and random civ choices.

For the record, my play window is CST from roughly 4:00 to 10:00pm, with perhaps a small window in the mornings from 5:30 to 7:00am.

Since it does not look like you guys want to do the ABCDDCBA type of civ picking, instead of each player getting 2/2 civs to pick from, how about each team gets 4/4 civs to pick from?

Emperor K, we did not talk about turn order yet, I am fine with that order as it is fairer.

I like the 4/4 pick, that's what I had in mind. So the team can decide which pair of civs it will take.

oh i was talking about civ picks. Instead of a random pool i was thinking the entire pool where team 1 picks first and last team 2 second and 7th team 3 picks 3rd and 6th and team 4 picks 4th and 5th.

I think it would add some interesting picks and synergies thats all. Not sure what the turn order should be probably the best order to get around a turn a day in.

EmperorK that's a snake pick, exactly what I meant by ABCDDCBA lol

Crisis averted! I wanted to confirm that our existing workaround would work with a standard sized map with 8 players and it does not. The 6-arm Snowflake setup is hard coded to a maximum of 6 players within the core game setup. Upon further investigation I discovered that the Earth map works on the same principle as the 6-arm Snowflake but is hard coded for maximum of 8 players. Otherwise the setup is exactly the same.

Therefore 8 is now the hard cap on number of players for a custom map using the Earth as the "script" when setting up a game, and you are good for this game. (EDIT: in case it wasn't clear, 8 is the maximum number of players, slots can be closed so this would still work for small/tiny/duel sized setups with less than 8 players)

Thanks for the information cornflakes.

I know you are busy at home smile Would you still be able to create a map. This game will start in around 3 weeks, so we still have some time for the finer details.
We are thinking of a map where each team has some room to expand and meets 3 CS (hence 12 CS minimum), but details have not been cast in stone just like the civilizations and teams. We still need someone to roll this for us. I don't want to roll it as I play.

Anyone can help us create the teams and give us the civilization choices?

Er ... have you guys actually agreed on how you want to do this? Specifically:

What needs to be decided about the teams? Are they meant to be selected completely at random among all the players? Or by timezone? Or someone suggested pairing vets with newer players? (If it's that one, who's on which list?) Also, do we assume Japper and Mikeforall are already one team per the first post in the thread, and just select the members of the other three?

And once teams are set, which civs should we randomize, and where should we post them? Are DLC civs to be included, and are they to be treated separately from the regular civs? Is anything banned? Do we post a set of options for each team, or each player, or ... what? I haven't see a clear consensus or summary on this stuff (though I may have missed it) and the post at the top of the thread still says:
