I also had the impression that lairs contains books or skills less often, so I think something changed there - probably in 1.40n, but perhaps earlier.

Stronger the magic the stronger opponents in lairs and thus greater rewards.
By the way, could you post savegames for the bugs you reported?

Right now I'm testing Aureus mod + Insecticide 1.40n, but I made 3/4 full games with plain 1.40n before. Every time I had the impression the reward is lower than expected (8 Sky Drake + 1 Djinn or 7 Wyrm + 2 Colossus giving few items) I had already reached the 13 books + 6 retorts limit.
With my mod this does not happen and I reached more than once 15 books and lots of retorts and powerful lairs give special rewards.
Only the people crazy enough to think they can change the world of Arcanus and Myrror can do it.

In general lair rewards don't seem very interesting in Insecticide patch, possibly because he fixed the bug with low level lairs producing high level rewards. It might be worth a general review of lair rewards, though; a neutral early-game city (say, it's got builder's hall, barracks, smithy, population 4, guarded by 4 swordsmen) would cost 180+ production to build for yourself, and that's not even counting the value of the population you lose for creating a settler, or the value of the population of the city, or the fact that a city, once created, has future use. A lair with four common summons is similar total effort to break, and probably contains something like 100 mana crystals. That's just not equal value.

This may be a 1.3 bug not fixed, but it's a hard crash. I believe the mechanism is this:
Capture an enemy wizard's fortress (I've been burning the city, not sure if it matters).
Learn the spell you are currently researching.
The game will not offer you an option for doing research.
If you open the magic screen, the game will crash hard.
If you hit next turn without visiting the magic screen, you'll get an option to select the spell you're researching, and the game won't crash.
The attached save game should allow reproducing the bug (army is right next to a fortress; the only spell the wizard knows that I can learn is summon champion, which is what I'm learning).

i'm reporting that stronger magic indead increase rewards! i' ve put it on highest and most of nodes have very strong creatures and give boks and perks for rewards
in one i had 4 wyrms with some bears and reward was 2 nature spell books
so, imho theres no need to balance that

It happens exactly as you said, but the game do not crash in my test.
I believe it crashed in your game, my guess is the memory was somehow corrupted; to check it try to reload the game and see if it crashes again.
Anyway the fact it did not ask you for a new spell to research it's a bug for sure.
In my test, when you try to check what spell are you researching in the Research pages (F3) it shows eight spells, but none highlighted; if you go to Magic screen the spell name is formed by casual chars, like a pointer to a non textual, another confirmation of the bug.
My test was done on plain 1.40n (MoM 1.31 + Insecticide patch); I tried razing and going to Magic screen directly, other variant, without razing, going to Research, casting spells before attackimg and other minor changes.
Only the people crazy enough to think they can change the world of Arcanus and Myrror can do it.

Crash difference is probably because I run MoM somewhat unusually (I don't use DosBox, I just use emulation modes on the shortcut. Not sure if it would work on a modern version of Windows. Does mean sound doesn't work, but I don't really care about that).
