Proposal: EitB Pitboss game

Mardoc Wrote:@DaveV - you can probably go ahead and take the 'tentative' off of Thoth and me on your roster page.

Done.

Mardoc Wrote:Do we have a host?

Based on my testing, definitely not me. My work computer can't connect to a game running on my home computer, but both can connect to PB7 on sunrise's machine.

Requirements for a host:
- A PC that's turned on All. The. Time. If (for example) Windows Update runs and the PC reboots, someone should be available to fire up the pitboss program quickly thereafter.
- A reliable internet connection.
- No connectivity issues.

Put me down as "tentatively interested", in case there's an incomplete team looking for another player.

I ran a test LAN game today, with two teams of two players. It takes an awful lot of clicking to play a solo pitboss game bang.

Events definitely work, although they seem to fire at the end of the turn (when you press Enter in response to the "Press Enter to end turn" prompt), instead of the beginning.

Lairs seem to work fine: exploration yielded a variety of results, they spawned the correct kind of monsters if left alone.

The game doesn't save up any beakers or hammers. If you don't have a tech or build queued up, the overflow (or the continuing production, if you forget to choose a target), goes into the bit bucket.

That's an encouraging test result, except for that overflow mechanic! Now we just need someone who can host - sadly, that isn't me. I seem to recall hearing about a bug in the program that prevents one host from handling more than one modded game, which means sunrise089 is also out until PB5 is over. Anyone out there got a spare rig sitting around?

There are only 18 unbanned civs. If we're doing a snake pick, I'd say 5 teams is an absolute maximum, and I'd really rather stop at 4; otherwise the last picks get to be almost dictated. Hopefully there's activity behind the scenes organizing the last couple teams.

have yall thought of adding "no city razing" to the list of settings?

I've always thought that would be an interesting variant to FFH2. (Might should ban the Kuriotates tho in that case? Or to just ban world-spells?)

I think pitboss teams always war is enough of a variant for now. Maybe we can consider adding more complexity to a later game.

I think I will sit this one out and dedlurk a team. Would be fun to play, but all this talk about team cohesion made me change my mind.

Hah. Found the source of my confusion....

BobChillingworth Wrote:So, since the game is a duel now, if you're interested we can try to carry it on via gamespy by loading the PBEM turn up there. I played several of the saves with my duel with Irgy that way- everything is still turn-based (no simultaneous moves like regular gamespy games), but it runs much more quickly because you don't have to load and email every save. The downside is that you can't use WS and events don't trigger, but we've both used up our WS and I personally don't care about events any more (I've used up most of the good ones by now anyway for my civ).

Bob was talking about Gamespy games.....and I thought he was talking about PB games.

With events and WS's working, we may want to revisit the huts/lairs settings.

And that overflow bug sounds like a nasty one.

Remember to queue things up everyone. smile

Based on our PB6 experience, I'd say that you are pretty easy to work with. If you could put up with an ornery SOB like me, I don't think you'd have much of a problem finding teammates that you can work with from the current list of potential players. smile

*ahem* We're capable of hosting any number of pitboss instances with our current hosting. We currently have 2 Pitboss games running simultaneously, soon to be 3.
