The United States had been interested in the islands since at least the 1860s, when President Andrew Johnson came close to obtaining St. Thomas and St. John. Denmark agreed to sell in 1867 for $7.5 million and the local population approved the transfer in a plebiscite, but the US Senate never voted on the treaty and it expired.[3][11] In 1889, there were rumors of negotiations between the Danish and the Germans for sale of the islands.[3] In 1902, the Danish Parliament rejected both a convention and a treaty with the United States.[12]

The United States acted again in 1915 because of the islands' strategic position near the approach to the Panama Canal, and because of a fear that Germany might seize them to use as U-boat bases during World War I. A referendum was held in Denmark on the future of the islands, which had become both a financial burden and strategic concern. On 17 January 1917, according to the Treaty of the Danish West Indies, the Danish government sold the islands to the United States for $25 million ($614 million in current prices) when the United States removed its objections to Denmark taking control of the whole of Greenland, and the U.S. and Denmark exchanged their respective treaty ratifications. Danish administration ended on 31 March 1917, when the United States took formal possession of the territory and renamed it the United States Virgin Islands.[13][14] Rear Admiral James H. Oliver was the first American governor of the Danish West Indies.[14]

At the time of the US purchase of the Danish West Indies in 1917, the colony did not include Water Island, which had been sold by Denmark to the East Asiatic Company, a private shipping company, in 1905. The company eventually sold the island to the United States in 1944, during the German occupation of Denmark in the Second World War.[15]

World War I had created a new situation: the relations between Germany and the United States were becoming worse as a consequence of Germany's unrestricted submarine warfare, and the Americans were concerned that, after an invasion of Denmark, Germany might take control of the islands.

It's rather like Britain seizing South Africa off the Netherlands during the Napoleonic Wars. North America is pretty much united, Europe is divided, so when a European war is active, the Anglo-Saxon powers can steal territories for free, or on the cheap if a "purchase" is "agreed".

Trump might have a point there - you need to genocide the people already living there and pressure them into signing unfair treaties…

That's a little too intense for my liking. I like to beg on the long term. So, I have been betting against the US (dollar) since March last year when gold was ~$2000, It is now $3200+, I am optimistic it will hit ~$4k by year end. Small risk but huge returns  

Well sure, I invest long term too, everything is in stock index funds.  Figured this worked both ways, a short term dip to buy, and even if it didn't bounce back right away, that's where the money would be going long term anyway.  The US stock economy still outperforms everything else on the planet on average.  I do wonder if I should diversify more, into gold or crypto or anything else.  I do have some in a REIT (real estate stock fund) but that's all.  Maybe I'll run to gold when the next D administration is about to get elected.

That post was from April 2025. I guess I was being shy about saying I was optimistic it would hit around $4k. It ended up peaking over $4.5k by the end of 2025, and now it’s at $4,884 and still trending upward as of January 20th 2026. 

Dare I say "I am optimistic it will hit ~$6k by year end?
