New Fall from Heaven II PBEM

Sciz should be last of the (many it seems) Europeans because he's such a night-owl. Unless others are too of course, I don't really know.

With such mostly-similar timezones we should do pretty well. I'm kind of the odd one out on the opposite side of the world, but being a full ~12 hours out of synch isn't so bad because my mornings are everyone else's evenings and vice versa

My vote on settings:

Prefer the defaults for basically everything, but if we want some twists that's fine. It could be argued that twists killed the game this is replacing, but there were certainly other factors at play there too. Maybe just less twists smile Acheron off or pre-placed is fine, on wouldn't bother me but I can see why people don't like it.

As for things that don't have default values:
* Standard world size for 6 players, wrap is mapmaker's choice, not fussed about the script but would like to know what script it's going to be based on before picking civs.
* Emporer difficulty. If not, then close to it (on either side) preferred.
* There's also the human Hyborem and/or Basium issue to discuss.
* People have talked about banning various things in the past, in particular Impersonate Leader. I'm inclined to leave everything as unbanned.
* Prefer restricted leaders mostly for balance reasons, but I can see the appeal of unrestricted.

I'm also happy to give the original players of PBEM4 a higher weighted vote on the settings, since this is kind of still their replacement game. But those are my opinions anyway.

Do I see a presumption that a mapscript will be used? How preposterous of you, good sir! Are you implying that I am incapable of generating a number of fractals in my head, superimposing them upon each other for accurate renditions of rainfall and altitude, to arrive at a rendition of a world sublime in its versimilitude? wink

Seriously, though, happy to let you know what mapscript will be used if there is sufficient desire upon the players' part (say, another couple of votes for it?) - though an argument can also be made to keep you in the dark regarding the map type, as seems to be the tradition, with several PBEM games' lurkers deriving great pleasure from watching the players spend the early game trying to guess the map type.

Actually the only thing I particularly care about is whether or not it's a script with the flavour-based starting locations. Those have a significant impact on the balance of certain choices of civ is all, and it's just good to be aware of it. Other than that I'd actually prefer not to know.

In that case, I can answer straight away - no, the flavoursome starting locations will not be in place; whilst they are nice, they also contribute to imbalance between civilizations in a horrible way.

A good call there I think.

I almost feel like anyone taking over Hyborem or Basium should strive to roleplay as much as possible. Regardless I'm fine with human takeover

Can see where you're coming from here, unfortunately without actually having these OP things demonstrated in a game its hard to judge just how bad they'll be. In theory one raider horseman could raze a dozen cities, while someone controls a civ, is that fun?

PBEM4 player or not, your opinion matters just as much, we're all going to hopefully be playing this game a long time so 6 months down the road is a bit late to be unhappy with settings!

I agree with everything Dantski said.

I'll put my vote in for unrestricted leaders. I'm not going to push for anything else insane though. I already wrecked one PBEM that way...

Map wise, I'd prefer something where water isn't a big deal. Naval combat in FFH is boring, and in general it just cuts down on everybody's options if they have to be using OO just to stay in the running.

I'd prefer it if we could get contact with other players quite quickly too.

I prefer restricted leaders, but agree wholeheartedly with the two other options!

Ok so 3 people prefer restricted and since I was fine with either I think we've finally decided something lol.

Like Selrahc I don't want to play an archipelago map that much, an all land map is ok I guess, but giving the players a reason to go down the fishing line of techs is still good. For all the bashing of Civ5 thats happened on this forum, Civ4's naval combat is still rather uninspiring.

I think early contact etc should be left upto the mapmaker, sure if he wants to place all our capitals within touching distance while we expand into the backlines he can do that if he likes but I wouldn't want him to compromise on that
