[SPOILERS]PB34:Burnin' Daylight - DMOC/gsorel/Ichabod

A journalist in my twitter feed tells me:

So for Ichabod I have made these animated photos so that our team stays competitive if memetic warfare breaks out in this game:

P.S. I did check the settings when I was in game. Tech costs match what we were expecting for a Large/Prince/Fractal map.

I doubt we'll have that kind of warfare in this game. lol

I'll try to figure out how to log in the game successfully sometime in the next few days. I'm going to be busy with some other events for the next few days and traveling. Hopefully things will get resolved.

Good luck! There was no turn when I logged in today - Borche had yet to play. It seems everyone settled except for Elkad.

Thanks for the info about the settling situation. If the starts were mirrored roughly, I'm a bit puzzled as to why Elkad didn't settle in place (presumably on a plains hill). I've settled away from a plains hill a few times, but usually it's because I could settle on a 3f tile. Oh well, we'll find out after the game.

EDIT: Assumed everyone except Elkad settled on t0, and updated the settling table in the previous post.

The album for turn 1 is up; Elkad played his turn while I was online and settled.

The scout found fish and so a solid coastal city site to the west: either claiming the whale or on the bare grass hill.

I suggest we move the scout southwest next turn as this is sufficient to reveal the BFC of the grasshill plant. Whales are available at Sailing so The Wheel->Fishing->Pottery->Sailing might be strong after BW.

I'll start collecting demographics going forward:

Hey y'all,

Here's your sim. Sorry it took so long; I got very sick and then had to travel, so I sorta forgot. frown Anyways, good luck!

Thanks for the sandbox! I might have time this weekend to check that out. Fortunately, my schedule starts to clear up in about a month, and by that time we'll hopefully be needing our next round of sims.

Regarding the exploration -- I agree with the proposed scout move. let's go 1sw, and then next turn, hopefully there's a 2-move that makes sense.

Having a second cow and fish over there is looking good for our short-term prospects. Let's keep exploring. smile

One thing I will note from the demographics is that the starts appear to be mirroed in the sense that everyone gets a lake tile in their capital. The rival average is (10*8000)/11 = 7272 and should be 8000 now that Elkad has settled.

OK - turn 2 is up here.

DMOC, Ichabod - I could use some advice. We have 2663 land tiles, 12 players, and significant coast around our capital. 2663/12=221 tiles for each player. That's a full first ring for each player.

And yet:

Gawdzak had yet to move when I played so this suggests the Russian capital is only 10 tiles from ours. Recall that Gawdazak is our doppelganger Julius Caesar (IMP/ORG) of Russia (Mining, Hunting).

Here is the situation:

I will think more about how to handle this, but I figure we have three options:

1) Proceed with a two worker start.
2) Build a settler at size 3 (t28). We settle for the border 30 or the whale t29 - elsewhere if we need time to hook copper.
3) Research The Wheel->Mining->BW and build a settler at size 2 (t26) to settle the border t27. We don't see copper until t31.

Option 3 gives the best chance of settling for the fish, but it is risky. I think Gawdzak will research BW first and so could hook copper - worst case even without The Wheel - and push before we have a chance to respond. I bet Gawdzak chose Russia exactly because of the starting techs and planned a quick first settler perhaps followed by Stonehenge.

We get visibility on Gawdzak's capital on t4 - I figure we select a tech and commit then.

Demographics:

Here is what the quickest settler would look like:

t10: The Wheel is complete. Research Mining.
t12: Worker is complete. Put one turn in to a warrior.
t13: Put one turn in to the settler.
t14: Start growing.
t15: Sheep is pastured.
t16: Road towards the cow.
t17: Mining is complete. Research BW.
t19: Grow to size 2. Warrior is complete.
t20: Cow is pastured. Settler in 6t with 3h->1h overflow.
t22: Road towards border. We have the worker turns to road a forest.
t26: Settler is out.
t27: Settle.

The playthrough continues in the album, but a lot would depend on what Gawdzak does.

A tough situation. If IMP/Russia weren't such a fast start things would be a lot easier for both teams, I think. It would be very easy for Gawdzak to play aggressively and gamble that we will play passively. Except defect-defect for us is to just build Shock axes. I think we would be compelled to do this if, say, Gawdzak planted aggressively and then was successful in landing a religion.

Man, I should be thinking about other things, but I remembered this:

We are AGG, perhaps we should use that trait to settle a fair but favourable border with Gawdzak. We grow to size four on two warriors and push so as to make it difficult for Gawdzak to spam a fast settler in our direction until he hooks copper. We can whip to get a fast second settler.

Why am I surfing the internet? Iiam

I read the first section of Gawdzak's PB22 thread where he discusses civ/leader picks and I think I misread the situation - I believe that if he also has a grain to start he (in a vacuum) will go Agriculture first.

I think:

1) Select Mining this turn - rushing the fish is silly until we know the location of copper.
2) Once we know Gawdzak's first tech, then make a plan. If he goes Agri first, then we have evidence our starts are similar and we can proceed accordingly.
