For me it was also very surprising that the last 4 of the starting 12 civilizations were so close together. The narrowness of the map and the possibility to launch amphibious attacks from the own territory made the game alone hardly winnable then.

You know, that coastline has been giving me nightmares for at least 150 turns.

I felt the same when SD was alive. I literally had #1 army for like most of the game but couldn't have defended old Jack coast with him if he had come at me.
