Irgy Wrote:In that case, you can at least work it out from the maintenance costs once you have a second city. Apparently the distance from the capital is scaled differently in each of the x and y directions depending on the wraparound, to account for the fact that everything is generally closer if the map wraps.

I don't know the formula though so it might be a bit of work to figure it out.
Yeah, I've heard about that. I'm not precisely sure of the formula either - although if anyone has a link to an article about it, I'd be keen to read up.

Seems like the easiest solution will be at some point to just head north and see if we encounter an edge or not, though. wink

Thanks Cyneheard.

So it seems we'll be able to make an educated guess at a few numbers and figure out if we have a toroidal map or not by looking at the distance maintenance on the second city, when it gets founded sometime around turn 35-40. Or maybe we'll just run into an edge before then, which will make everything a lot simpler. wink

Take a look at the game settings and rules in the first post of the sign-up thread. There is some information there that might be of use to you.

Ah, okay. I did recall that there had been a majority of people voting for cylindrical, but I didn't know if some form of "mapmaker's choice" could override that.

So, assuming the map is cylindrical, we're probably likely to be at the north pole, even though technically the terrain types (tundra/snowy forest) could be a bluff by the mapmaker meaning we're actually in the south. North is more likely though, I think.

Map wrap was left up to the mapmaker, but several people requested to know the map wrap prior to making their pick, so Krill posted the map wrap prior to selections.

Okay. Apparently I'm just oblivious and/or forgetful, then. lol

Okay, Warrior moved onto the Sheep tile as planned. Didn't reveal any new resources, just some new land.

1NW next turn, I guess, given that there's no other option for continuing west? smile

So it's confirmed that we have tundra to our north, which suggests (but doesn't absolutely confirm) that we're in the north of this cylindrical map. There's also a peak 2SW of the Sheep tile, although it seems that doesn't block off what looks like a land bridge there because there's a grassland (hill?) land tile 1S of the peak. A city (or unit) placed 1E of the peak would block any invasion from coming through that choke point, although it looks like they could just walk around to the north of that 4 tile lake - so it doesn't seem to be a particularly useful choke point.

I'd be interested to find out whether the water we can see south of that 4 tile lake is a lake or a sea. We might be able to tell when our capital's borders expand, or if not then exploration will soon tell us (if not with the current Warrior then with another).

You can also tell if the fog-gazed water is a freshwater lake by whether the grass forest tile just S of the silk says "fresh water". Although it could still be a big salty lake.

My guess is NW-SW-SW for the warrior, but we'll see.
