Hey - if you can sell 1, why not sell 3.
Quote:DJ,
I've recently met the Incas. They mentioned they might be interested in a missionary and I offered to sell them one. I'd like to extend the offer to you too. I haven't agreed on terms so that area is still fluid but I did mention that it is dependent on my ability to build them and the opportunity cost for the Aztec nation.
Cheers,
Ruff

Hi all,
Checking in to be a turn-playing monkey as and when needed.
Up to now I have not had any involvement with PB#3, so was completely un-spoilered before I started reading the thread (not the case now). Even so, I'll try to just follow orders as much as possible and not offer opinions / advice so as to remain in a (roughly) neutral state. OTOH, I also have no plans at this point to lurk through anyone else's thread for this game ... or find out much about it at all!
So Ruff asked me to look in on the game while he's away and play turns as needed ... unfortunately I forgot to tell him that I was also away this weekend, but should be back mid-day Sunday.

The Bear moved straight West without attacking! I moved the Warrior NE away because even across the river odds suck.
Western Warrior moved SW moved - some more forests revealed.
Worker started to Farm Sheeps.

I'll play turn 29.
I'm not convinced on the monastery ---> missionary path just yet.
If we want a better tech pace, we have a strong gold city to claim. But that's not an issue JUST yet. Alternatively, settling near the oasis would allow instant trade routes + working the oasis, also a faster research approach than a monastery at this point. I agree on working with allies nearby, but that doesn't mean we should cut our expansion/longterm potential for it. When a missionary is a lower opportunity cost selling it seems less painful.
Turn 29 moves:
- Worker continues to farm sheep (3f 1H 1C tile is our next best before AH or IW, it soundly beats a hill mine). I suggest the grassland hill mine next, but if you want a slightly better research rate the riverside plains hill is comparable. IMO city growth and production is a higher priority however. Regardless, completing the farm is better than a mine right now and our best move.
- Eastern warrior 1E onto forest. Defensive terrain + the ability to continue eastward on defensive terrain. Also, it guarantees no near-future run-ins with the bear. Reveals 1 desert and 2 plains forest.
- Western warrior 1W onto plains forest. We have future move options of a forest hill SW or grass forest NW. I suggest the forest hill, though we are nearing indian lands and may want to consider looping around after that.

Turn 30 a go go!
- Mining in, continuing on to bronze working
- Farming away at that sheep
- Eastern Warrior SE onto plains forest, which is riverside. Reveals 2 hills (one forest, one not) and a grassland tile. If a food resource is found this is a potential city site, but none in view yet.
- Western warrior SW onto forest hill, revealing a plains hill, some grassland, a plains tile, 2 grass forests, and a plains forest. No food resources in sight. We could explore the northern patch of fog next, but I suggest heading SE to check out the land there and potentially meet others.
We finish the warrior and grow to pop 3 in the capitol next turn. Possible builds:
-Barracks: no, military we produce now is unlikely to be a meaningful factor outside of exploration/anti-barbs and it will take too long.
-Monument: no, we are still 3 under the cap after growth
-Monastery: no, this is worth exactly 1 beaker/turn to us now and costs as much as another worker
-Worker: yes, we are behind on worker turns vs city growth right now
-Warrior: yes, we will need a forward spawn bust unit for future city sites and there remains scouting potential
-Scout: no, we want something sturdier against barbarian units and in a pinch against other players
-Settler: yes, we have a priority site worth and commerce, and a closer site that immediately improves our research
If we are going to go for the gold site first, I suggest a warrior. If we want to settle oasis/corn/FP (1N of corn), we could go for a settler immediately next, and start the western warrior on a "scout southeast then garrison" loop.
Without further input in future turns, my path would be settler ---> worker finishes sheep, mines riverside plains hill (hammers and food are equal when building workers/settlers and that nets a commerce), settle 1N of corn.

thx for stepping in TMIT. A close 1st city is a good option and then a push to Gold city once BW and forest chopping comes in. My idea for Western warrior is to defog the land between us and India and loop back West of the 3 water tiles, defogging the land North of that water.
Do what you think is best re build.

diplo stuff ... email from Exploit
Quote:Ruff,
Thanks for the offer and I may take you up on it later, perhaps as part of a tech deal. At the moment though it is a little early for me to consider buying missionaries.
Congratulations on your speedy scouting. I still have not met anyone other than yourself and a bunch of barbarian animals. On the positive news front, I did manage to avenge your scout by killing the lion that killed him.
Regards,
Exploit

Quote:Thanks for the note ruff.
I think we are definitely interested in a missionary. Like we mentioned before, even though as human players there is no real "We care for our brothers and sisters of the faith" bonus, often times it does seem to play out that way....
I'll try to get an "official" response out to you shortly, but in the meantime, do you have any info on where the Incas might be located? We can also let you know that we ran into a HRE scout right near our capital. They say that they are far to the SE, and have met one other civ that was mostly to your south, but mentioned that the civ in question asked to not be identified. Not sure what that is all about.
We told them where you were located but if you have any scouting units this way we'd be happy to arrange a meeting.
Also, per our agreement, we have ceased EP spending towards you
DJ Civ.
Quote:DJ,
We do have a warrior heading your way to defog some area. I am not totally sure where he is (not the turn player at the moment) but if you could give directions from your rice tile (or the pig tile to your NE, 1 tile SE of the 1 tile water) for HRE that would be good. I'll pass them on to our turn player.
Re the nameless civ ... I must say that sounds totally like Krill.
Cheers,
Ruff
re EPs - spend against India to the level to see their demographics and then swap to another civ. India has stopped spending EPs against us (as agreed).

Turn 31:
- We have demographic data on india. Checking the EP screen, we have met kalin and exploit too. For now, I'll leave the 2:1 ratio on exploit, spending the rest on kalin. Note that india has roughly double our power, suggesting either a power based tech on us or additional units. Their agreement to allow us to see this is promising, but we still shouldn't ignore any spikes
- Warrior done in capitol, start on settler. Warrior left in for garrison since it can't usefully scout much w/o putting us at risk against a 1 warrior rush.
- Worker continues farming sheep (complete next turn)
- Eastern warrior 1S onto plains forest, with intention of moving onto the forest hill after that. Reveals a plains forest hill
- Western warrior SW onto the forest. Our settler will take 13 turns (probably 1-2 less after improvements) so we have a couple turns before heading back. This reveals riverside wheat, a couple forested plains hills, and a grassland hill. Definitely a potential city site.
That's it for this turn.

I've asked India for instructions on meeting HRE - hopefully, those will come in soonish. Any chance of a few screenshots?

Can we spare our western warrior a few turns to move towards India in the hope of meeting 2 other civs? Actually (reading the below), looping our western warrior more west as it travels north might work out on both fronts (unfog and met Krill).
Quote:Ruff,
Unfortunately we can only provide directions to the HRE scout we met (which we prematurely feared was killed) and it has moved back into the fog. We will email the HRE and ask for a meeting spot. Probably the best direction for your warrior in the meantime is directly towards our land, since we don't know whether the HRE scout went east or west.
We are pretty sure the nameless civ is not Krill, since we just met Krill ourselves He is located rather far to our SW but currently has a warrior working his way north around our land. If you send your warrior towards our land we'll make sure you meet Krill as well as the HRE.

-DJCiv

Quote:DJ,
That is interesting news regarding Krill. I didn't expect another player out there to be so paranoid about revealing identity. Might you, it could still be Krill that the HRE have met (have you checked F4 to see if they have met each other?) as this sort of 'messing with the players minds' is just like Krill.
I have passed your email onto our turn player and will see if we cannot get our warrior heading your way to met up with Krill.
Cheers,
Ruff
btw - does anyone know how to add certain text to hot key combinations within firefox ... I am getting really bored of typing in '[quote] [\quote]' all of the time.
