Is that character a variant? (I just love getting asked that in channel.) - Charis

[No Players]PBEM L for the Lurkers

Brick, I like your post in the tech thread. To head off some nitpicks:
-no one sees their full BFC, but some see more than others (just like in single player starts)
-No improvements (overpowered or not) should be present in the starting bfc, this problem was fixed in Seven's latest version of torusland. Still they are an issue nearby if the settler moves, or someone gets a supercharged 2nd city.

noted, edited the post to reflect those, thanks for pointing those out.

With luck we'll see them all decide to play the map as rolled

I wasn't sure that Sury was going to be picked with the first map, but I'm almost positive of it with the new starts.

Anyway, I don't think they foresaw this possibility of not seeing any food and potential imbalances arising from that when deciding to see starts before picking. So I would fix (what I see as) the problem for them, but that is only my interpretation of the supreme mandate of having a balanced and interesting game as a mapmaker / map setuper.

I love that graph. Every aspect of my personality is chaotic good smile

Naw, they're doing the default 29% water setting. Having rolled a map or two of those, many of the channels aren't large enough to build ships in. Even those that are won't have enough water tiles for either to be too powerful I'd say.

I can't imagine any map where the dutch are overpowered, tbh

Merovech's Mapmaking Guidelines:
0. Player Requests: The player's requests take precedence, even if they contradict the following guidelines.

1. Balance: The map must be balanced, both in regards to land quality and availability and in regards to special civilization features. A map may be wonderfully unique and surprising, but, if it is unbalanced, the game will suffer and the player's enjoyment will not be as high as it could be.

2. Identity and Enjoyment: The map should be interesting to play at all levels, from city placement and management to the border-created interactions between civilizations, and should include varied terrain. Flavor should enhance the inherent pleasure resulting from the underlying tile arrangements. The map should not be exceedingly lush, but it is better to err on the lush side than on the poor side when placing terrain.

3. Feel (Avoiding Gimmicks): The map should not be overwhelmed or dominated by the mapmaker's flavor. Embellishment of the map through the use of special improvements, barbarian units, and abnormal terrain can enhance the identity and enjoyment of the map, but should take a backseat to the more normal aspects of the map. The game should usually not revolve around the flavor, but merely be accented by it.

4. Realism: Where possible, the terrain of the map should be realistic. Jungles on desert tiles, or even next to desert tiles, should therefore have a very specific reason for existing. Rivers should run downhill or across level ground into bodies of water. Irrigated terrain should have a higher grassland to plains ratio than dry terrain. Mountain chains should cast rain shadows. Islands, mountains, and peninsulas should follow logical plate tectonics.

the dutch need astronomy and steam power to unlock their awesome unique units. there are very few rb games where the game isn't decided by astronomy, and even less where it isn't decided by steam power. even on archipelego, another civ should be able to bee line chemistry and neutralize east indiamen.

edit: to clarify, I think the the dutch have an awesome unique unit AND an even more awesome unique building. the problem is only that they come to late.

Well, we've all been waiting for the Krill vs Seven matchup to happen in a game. Now we get to see it with close borders

How would everyone rank the quality of the starting locations? I need to go back and look them over, but I would guess Krill got the worst and Thoth got the best, but I'm not sure on that at all.
