Oh yeah, and I've spotted Gaspar's scout via the watchtower. Dunno how to deal with that and formulating a greeting, I haven't "met" him yet, may need to wait til next turn.

A single warrior *should* be able to defend from a Lizardman, especially across a river. I'd put the nearby warriors in the capital, to start stacking fortify bonus, and get ready to ride the waves of barbs. If we're lucky, we'll have some experienced units ready to be upgraded by the time Pyre Zombies come around. The worker won't have anything easy to do though...
The Elves are a pretty good neighbour, but they'll be difficult to rush. Their worldspell will be coming online around the same time as the Zombies are getting ready to rumble.

Gaspar Wrote:Hate to do this so early, but I have to hold the turn a bit over a crucial negotiation. I will play as soon as it becomes possible. Sorry everyone.
Why did I know it would be me when I saw this in the tech thread
Quote:Greetings great and terrible leader of the Sheaim,
Normally, the friendly forest people of the Ljosalfar would invite you to frolic in the trees and perhaps offer up some kind bud at this momentous first meeting of the Age of Rebirth. Unfortunately, this is not normally.
Our valiant explorer Cheech has made in roads towards Sheaim territory, and has in fact found your borders. Now, the Ljosalfar people have read some of the lore from Epics gone by, and understand that a valued member of your Elder Council is a ardent supporter of sending hordes of animated corpses set ablaze at the nearest enemy at his earliest convenience. While we appreciate smoking the roach as much as anyone, we suspect this is not what you have in mind.
So, to the point - Cheech is standing on top of a dungeon on a hill 4 tiles away from your city center. He has a bird's eye view of a angry Lizardman who appears to be 3 tiles from said center. The Ljosalfar value peace. If the Sheaim can affirm their commitment to the same, then Cheech will not explore that dungeon, I will end the turn, and die peacefully to the angry Lizardman, thereby ameliorating any threat on sovereign Sheaim lands. However, if you can not make such a commitment, then we will instead see what potential dangers the dungeon holds... Azers, Mistforms... there's a whole host of possibilities.
[Out of Character] We know Selrahc loves him a PZ rush. I assume you feel the same way. I don't want to have to spend the next 50 turns ruining both of our economies making sure that we're not on the receiving end of one. You give me a T100 NAP to assure me you've no hostile intentions and I don't maybe end your game on T10. I don't want to do that, but you know what you get yourself into when you pick Sheaim. The NAP shall include any and all hostile actions, including any lair/dungeon/barrow pops within 5 tiles of the others culture. If we can make this agreement, I think we can be friends. Maybe we can even help you in pursuing a more tempting PZ-rush target than the elves - what with 2 moves on all units in our heavily forested lands and Treants on the horizon. Like all good Elves, we would rather live in peace than bloody stalemated war.
Unfortunately, if you can't respond quickly, I'll have to act in the negative, as my scout is likely at the end of his life regardless. I have no desire to hold up the game for everyone else over this matter.
Kindly yours,
Gaspar of the Ljosalfar

My response:
Quote:Hey Gaspar,
No time to compose a clever RP response, I'm still at work. I'd be fine accepting a NAP up to and including T100, and I'd be glad to discuss and co-operate with any joint military ventures you have in mind. We agree that no hostile actions like DoWs or sniping of lairs and graveyards in our spheres of interest will take place during the duration of the NAP. I'd also be interested in a contact deal regarding the other nations.
Yours,
Nicolae
PS. If you've already explored our dungeon, then I request that any portable artifacts be returned to us. If a non-portable reward appears, then I request that we are allowed to explore a dungeon of your choosing in your sphere of influence as compensation. I'm interested in fair play. If a mistform appears, well, then I'm fucked anyway, but I hope it doesn't come to that.
PSS. What the hell is an Azer anyway? I know they're S3 + 3fire, I'm not enough of a fantasy buff to know if they're original or who what made them up.
Very simple, diplomacy over the internet has never been my strong suite. Gaspar loves his diplomacy, and I'm not a fan of his blustering. However, he holds more of the cards than I'd prefer, I don't think he's much of a C&D buff as he'd realise I have a mere 2 warriors and am going warrior-worker. I've always been a mechanics buff, I try to be good at it in BTS and have no idea what to prioritise in FFH.
Plus, I don't think PZing them will be particularly easy, so I guess a T100 NAP is fine. They're probably better at landgrabbing than I am, though.

The dungeon isn't that scary. Giving him a free NAP until T100 is a pretty juicy deal for him! It basically guarantees that he can have March of the Trees ready before we can attack, and he can get to it in a fairly leisurely fashion. We want our neighbours feeling a lot more pressured than that. Either beeline the defensive techs to the detriment of their economies, or gift us something to give them a NAP.
Ljos aren't better at landgrabbing that anybody unless they're playing Thessa. Elven workers are slow, and building improvements on forests makes them even slower. Elves in general have a tortuously slow start up
Someone threatening to explore a dungeon isn't much of a bullet. The odds of him popping something that would be a genuine danger to you are low. The fact that he'd be dead before trying again takes even more of its teeth.
If you've sent the message then what's done is done. Not much we can do about it now. Gaspar definitely came out ahead here though.

I have no idea how long it normally takes to get the tech that allows the Ljo worldspell, and I was more worried about the fact we have a mere 2 warriors while neighbouring a lizardman ruin and going for an economy build. Plus, I assumed that we weren't going to get a chance to rush them, due to MotT anyway (the FFH wiki doesn't list the tech). May be good to get some friends in this world.
On the other hand, he did deliberately hold the save for a good 6 hours while threatening to hold the save anyway, so I can't trust him either. Hopefully Acal or Mackoti will play before I get home.

March of the Trees requires Way of the Forests, the founding technology for Fellowship of Leaves.
Way of the Forests requires Hunting and Mysticism, both of which are good but quite expensive early technologies. On a less strict beeline the Ljosalfar would want to get Calendar, Agriculture and Education before Hunting. Possibly grabbing Archery before Way of the Forests to get started on Gilden Silveric and the elven archers.
We would probably be able to get Pyre Zombies active before he has the March of the Trees ready to handle them, but not much before. Any sort of pyre zombie rumble in his land would have the side effect of burning down most of his trees, something he would be very keen to avoid. He'll be quite scared of us.
He isn't our best rush target. But he is a possibility. We should certainly have attempted to get something out of him in return for a valuable early game NAP. And we'd better hope the other neighbour isn't one of your genuine unrushables, like the Elohim or Hippus.
Anyway.. not a disaster or anything! Hopefully you've set the seeds for later cooperation. Just could have been played very differently, and probably more advantageously.

Part of me wants to offer Pyre Zombie aid to his defence. It would be funny.
Also, I think everyone in the game is going to assume that I was the reason for the delay, because I haven't been updating this thread all that much. My saves are in, I'll take care of them now.
