The Way of the Civ Player - Ichabod and Wetbandit's PB13 Spoiler Thread

By the way, did anyone around here read the book I'm talking about? It's pretty good, in my opinion.

Don't worry, though. I'll probably just use the setting of the book to write some low level fiction of my own here.

Thank you for the welcome!

I've actually globally lurked the last few PitBosses and several PBEMs.
I'm going to do the same with this one, only more vocal than before.

You've already lost me with the different names, but once you tie it into fiction it should become more clear and I'm looking forward to it.

Haven't read it, but it sounds like it should go onto my Kindle so I can change that.

My diplomatic advisor discovered that Team Pindicooter is playing Darius of the Vikings and Commodore-San is playing Victoria of Portugal. Both expressed concern on the possibility of bordering the great Greek nation.

It's a very good story about self-improvement. It has a lot of Japanese and Buddhist culture, but it's acessible to people without any particular knowledge of it (like myself). The plot in itself can sound a bit too serendipitous at times, but the thoughts, discoveries and learning of the main character (Musashi) are extremely well written and are actually pretty inspiring too.

It's a big book (~900 pages, I'd say), but it's certainly worth it.

EDIT: Updated thread name to add Wetbandit's name to it.

Picks that jump to my eyes:

Pacal of India - Of course this is the most flashy one! It got severely nerfed by RBMod - Expansive nerfed, Financial nerfed and Fast Worker + India starting techs nerf. But... Well, it's Pacal of India, man! Even the nerfed Fast Workers can give quite some help to make things happen faster. But as pointed out to me before, normal speed is not where the FW shines more (they are way better at quick speed, where every single turn is worth more).

Mehmed of Ottomans - ORG is one of the best traits in the mod right now, in my opinion. Double speed Hammans are good, no matter what people say. Janissaries are still good. Incredibly effective combo.

Sury of Carthage - Carthage got some good buffs: cheaper Cothon, making it a pretty decent building on our full-of-trade-routes setting (which Sury gets on a discount). Numidian Cavalry got buffed (Combat 1 HA from the get go, which you can get to C2 shock from the get go). Unfortunately, creative overlaps with barracks, so not that much luck there. Either way, solid pick.

Ragnar of Maya - Because it's Plako playing, ffs. lol

Lots to digest this morning.

Pacal of India! Even with the nerfs, still bet that's a top combo. Agree with your other thoughts as well. In retrospect, I'm glad we don't have IND. It's such a crapshoot with so many players that an early wonder beeline seems inherently risky. That said, if I'm counting right, there are only 3 IND.

So with that in mind, I counted up all the traits; not sure that this information means anything, but here it is:

EXP: 6 (Shaka, Pacal, Joao, Sury, Mehmed, Isabella)
AGG: 4 (Shaka, Alex, Ragnar, Monty)
FIN: 7 (Ragnar, Pacal, Darius, WK, Vicky, Mansa, HC)
PHI: 3 (Alex, SB, Ghandi)
PRO: 3 (SB, Qin, WK)
SPI: 5 (Ramesses, Monty, Isabella, Mansa, Ghandi)
IND: 3 (Ramesses, Qin, HC)
CHM: 0 !
IMP: 2 (Joao, Vicky)
ORG: 2 (Darius, Mehmed)
CRE: 1 (Sury)

So maybe IND isn't so bad off, in the long run, with only three. Funny that we have seven Financial leaders given the random pairings.

Non-Game related:
Thanks for adding my name to the thread. I failed in my efforts to locate a free copy of Musashi, the County's free electronic library reserve let me down. I'll order it through some other method.

And I should have remembered that India's techs were changed to Myst/Wheel. So Jowy has to research lots of worker techs before he gets going, very slow start potentially. We'll see how quickly he can start growing.

Ahem, 3 hammer settle........

That's an amazing capital! 3 hammers on the city tile + marble is just soooo good. Talking a bit about the mod with other players, it seems that expansive WB's are very good and it seems we can get one incredibly fast here. Lots of food with a lighthouse, lots of hills and forests, likely a strategic resource 1NW of the capital.

There's a chance we have seafood to the west of the settler, but that doesn't change anything at all regarding settling on the marble.

It's a bit commerce poor considering things for the late game. But, otherwise, it's an incredible capital. I'll probably add some farms, like the ones needed to irrigate the corn. Later, probably build workshops around (though early game some cottages might be needed).

jive

And since mostly everything is revealed, I can start simming now! And I'm certain there's grass pigs 2N or 2E of the Settler.
