It can be fun for the OCD. Microing one city? Bah! Try microing 5-6 cities all in a grid so that they are all optimized.
If only you and me and dead people know hex, then only deaf people know hex.

I write RPG adventures, and blog about it, check it out.

Well the good thing about micro is that it becomes less and less important as the game goes on

Yeah, a revelation for me was realizing that sharing tiles can actually be a big win. Think of two cities that share high food and high production: one can build workers or settlers while the other grows, and vice versa, and the net result can be much stronger than the same resources distributed evenly between the two cities.

And here we go!

Scout pattern will be 2-3 turns to the northwest until I hit the outer coast, then I will head in a straight line towards the centre of the donut, then southeast along the inner coast, then at some point I will cut in a straight line and clear up an equal amount on the right hand side. The most important elements of scouting in MP, from what I can tell, are

1) meet other civs
2) Plan your first 4-5 cities ahead of time

This plan gives me a good chance of meeting each of my civs on either side, and then clears out enough land around my capital to plan most of my core. After that, if the scout is still alive, he can head around the map to find the others.

First person to guess my city naming scheme before I plant my second city gets an internet cookie.

You will get a PIECE of a cookie if you figure it out after the second city, because it will be super obvious then.

I don't know maybe Fringe?

Wild guess, it's based on the Deus Ex game. Next city would maybe be UNATCO?

Wait, maybe GTA although island sounds more like Fringe.
