[SPOILERS] Pindicator helps clean up SMEGmod

We are getting away from the suburbs of Burgos now, away from navigating around vehicle-dominated streets, away from roads of any kind other than gravel, and back to the little towns along the Way. Now we are in the Spanish meseta, the second chapter of our pilgrimage. The land spreads out forever in every direction. Many people say they are stopping in Burgos and bussing ahead to León to skip the boringness of the meseta, but walking out here, it is immediately obvious that they are missing out on an unappreciated beauty. The vastness of the land, the way you can pick the path out as it snakes ahead. The quiet brilliance lends to this feeling of vastness, and it turn leaves you feeling small.

There is no escape from the sun on the meseta. We have picked our destination out for the day, a town called Hontanas, which according to both our guidebooks is supposed to be just a couple kilometers ahead. How can that be? We can see in every direction what seems to be forever, and there is no sign of a town. Twenty minutes later a sign is on the gravel path: Hontanas, 500m.

This must be a joke, there is no town in sight, no hill or bend for it to be around. All we can see is the road ahead and the meseta stretching out in every direction.

And then slowly as the steps fall the mystery is revealed. The land that looked to go on unbroken ahead begins to shift; as you get closer we see what looked like flat meseta begins to drop off into a hidden valley. And in the valley a church steeple is first spotted, then the rest of the town begins to take form:

That night the sunset was one of the most magnificent I had ever seen. All those people who stopped at Burgos to skip ahead have no idea what they were missing.

*****

My Hontanas is not quite as hidden, but I hope one day it will be just as beautiful.

Notice in the upperleft that German-Joey has founded Christianity and unlucky for me, it went right on my border. He switched to make it his state religion immediately, simply to begin winning that culture war, and forcing me to switch to a culture building there. This is very irritating, but he has revealed other things that make me realize what I need to do for my next steps.

In the southeast another culture battle is beginning to brew, with Brick popping borders in his city just 2 turns after I got a missionary into Azofra. I think I'll want to whip a monastery or library here as well, to make sure i hold onto that clam that I am netting.

But here is the big news of turn 110:

GermanJoey has gone all-in on this religious line beeline, but grabbing Paper before the backfill may have been a mistake. Now I know he does not have Math, which means he is several turns away from War Elephants, Catapults, and even farther from Maces. He can beeline Knights just like I can, but he does not have a lot of the solid units that make up the core of an army.

He's shown me that now is the time to attempt an attack. And further, I am the only one who can do it. The geography of this world is such that I border him in north and the south, and a thin border with plako is to his east, but that would not be hard for him to hold if plako was his only attacker.

Time to switch to unit production across the empire. Next turn we revolt to Vassalage and Slavery.

Next turn we find out if we win the race to Statue of Zeus.

I awoke to darkness and covered in sweat. The heat from the meseta was a blanket that did not come off at night. I could hear the voice now, as I heard it in my dreams. It was a raspy whisper that rose just above the sticky air. It was the Devil.

"Abre la ventana" the Devil said.

The sleeping bag was over my head. I grabbed the edge by from the inside and pulled it down as tightly as I could. There are few moments when a person gets to test their courage, and a voice in the back of my head told me I was about to fail mine.

Over dinner that night we had a discussion: what is the difference between a peregrino and a tourist? When does walking the camino cross over into punching your ticket at camino-land? We all agreed today's destination was closer to camino-land. We had walked through the vast, empty meseta, walking through villages that felt more like heirlooms than cities, and then at the end of the day came through a tiny town called Boadilla del Camino, with dusty roads, simple houses, and hardly a person to be seen. At the far end of town, a large gated albergue, complete with a small pool and green, manicured lawn, was the destination. There was WiFi and a large dining room and kitchen/cafeteria where you could purchase meals. Two buildings by the gate housed the bunkbeds. Beds for 96 people in all. White lining and sheets folded on top of each bed. Everything looked like it had been built within the year, pristine and clean. There were several large wash basins with clotheslines in the back so you could still wash your clothes by hand, Like a Real Peregrino. And there were washing machines inside in case you did not.

I did not like this place, did not like the company. A Swiss man was arguing against the table, playing devil's advocate. This was no less a place to stay than any other, he opined. We could all stay in private rooms and it would not make a difference. He even argued that the Italian tour bus that carried people's packs from destination to destination was not out of line, but he was the only one that would defend that position.

"Abre, abre la ventana," the Devil said again.

I cowered in my sleeping bag.

"¡Abre!"

I was a coward, but it was the Devil. What else was one to do?

"Abre la ventana!"

And then lights came on. "Who's there?" someone shouted and suddenly the entire place was alive, people out of their bunks. Someone went to the window right beside me. I pretended to wake and threw the sleeping bag off my head.

There was a man outside. He had been locked out and wanted us to let him in.

"Go around to the front," someone said, and they went to let him in.

Yet when they went to the front gate nobody was there; the man had disappeared.

******

I woke a second time that night to the sound of thunder and rain falling. My shoes were still outside, I realized, and probably soaked. For the second time I kept the sleeping bag over my head, and stayed in my bed.

I just got like half a dozen trade offers from Brick... I think he's trying to tell me GermanJoey is going to attack from my north.

Closed borders with German Joey. He's being a bit of an ass by shadowing my troops with a sentry Horse Archer. I'm not scouting his lands, and I only lose a little bit of commerce upon closing borders.

Maybe this makes him paranoid enough to start building a military. I'm not really into this game enough to actually attack him though. I'm sure that's a crime in some people's eyes, but i think I'm getting burnt out on Civ MP.

Is this the game you wanted a sub for? I'm unspoilt if so.

Yeah! This is the one. I'll start reporting again so you can get a sense of where we are between now and 7/2

Sorry! I've been scrambling to get school work done and get stuff ready for this trip. I'll be leaving Friday morning for Three Sisters Wilderness and be back Sunday night, so if you could play any turns between then that'd be great.

I'll post some detailed instructions later tonight or tomorrow but there won't be much direction because I haven't really been playing with much direction as my schedule has gotten full attention lately.

Man, three sisters sounds like more fun than a pitboss, I'd be ignoring this stuff too! The east side of the loop near middle sister got butned pretty bad two years ago, and aborted my planned trip there. So ive never been.

What route are you taking?
