[Spoilers] Dreylin tries to take over the World ... casually?

Parthenon in. goodjob

Next GSci due in 4t. After that I'll see what it'll take to get the Priest out of Troll ahead of the next one.

Keeping a watchful eye on the neighbours. AT has decided to send his EPs at me - and he invested in Courthouses before most did. I'll grab Nile's graphs and then return the favour, as mine are starting to come online as well (& at half-cost neenerneener).

Power graph is starting to tick upwards and close on Mr. Cairo - who I'm most likely to exchange blows with IMO. Research path is: Feudalism-Construction, then save for the run to Guilds/Banking (I'll probably slip HBR in there somewhere as well). Feudalism before Construction because I think I'll need to deter an amphibious attack before I'll need a stack of Cats to go after someone. Should be able to 2t Feud starting next turn (maybe a couple of Wealth/Research builds needed).

And Ichabod just adopted Emancipation, so that's a thing. yikes

I suppose the good news is that he just asked for OB, so we're friends ... with the 800lb Gorilla.

Still checking this now and then but I forgot it for a while when you were too busy with PB33. smile

I don't remember how far Emancipation is in the tech tree but according to your smiley I believe he's way ahead of us and everyone else?

What do you think of your chances in the future? If Cairo and Ichabod will eat their opponents they will become neighbours, right? So that could be a good thing I guess? Untill the Gorilla gets hunry again that is scared.

Emancipation is at Banking, so not too far off - I could probably have been starting Guilds about now if I hadn't diverted to the top of the tree. Ichabod also probably beelined pretty hard to Guilds for the Cataphracts, so we may not be too far behind on total beakers and may pull some back as his economy works to integrate Jowy, but Emancipation is a big boost and will help him spin ahead. Right now I'm thinking that I need to get Pikes ASAP (and preferably before Jowy dies) to have some sort of security. Also, Mr. Cairo has Elephants... rolleye

Vulnerabilities right now are from the NW (Mr. C) and maybe AT will look to nip off an island - which is why Triremes and Longbows will be the builds to start to bring my Power up to a respectable level.

Also, I'll declare on BRick this turn to grab another island city, and last turn I settled the Marble Island on the Gawdzak border - which could also turn out to be a mistake.

The great Marijuana Empire has engaged in their first offensive action! yikes

Heavy, dudes. smoke

Took risk on the first attack and sent in a unpromoted 6xp Sword at 65% odds; thought it was worth a try to score 4xp and get an HE unit. As you see, he lost. (too much smoke? I'll have to watch for that in the troops!)

You can also see the newly-settled Skunk on the left of the shot. I offered BRick Peace, and will go back to propping him up if he accepts. In other foreign news I'm also helping to prop up Adrien (with Copper) and BGN (with Happiness). BGN has also been asking for my Stone for a couple of turns; I resisted, but last turn I offered it back - I assume he's asking in order to build Walls. I've been charging Gawdzak 5gpt for our Open Borders agreement, but decided to cancel that this turn in order to build back goodwill. I also offered Mr. Cairo my spare Gems for his Incense - he hasn't got man (any?) Forges up yet, but he might also take it as a goodwill gesture.

pre-t150 musings.

This is going to be text-heavy, so I'll start with a picture:

That is the Scoreboard from the start of turn, which I have updated with my "completely legit" assessment of the current game state. So let's discuss:

Tier 1:
Ichabod & Gawdzak are clearly ahead of the pack, both being well on the way towards assimilating one of their neighbours. Gawdzak's gains have been more gradual, so he's getting value out of the earlier cities now, but Ichabod's lightning-fast demolition of Jowy has borne immediate fruit in seizure of the MoM. He also has Colossus enhancing his FIN coast and was the first to adopt one of the t2 civics set with Emancipation. The current question is whether his ravaging Cataphract horde will stop at Jowy's borders or will it venture further. scared

Gawdzak leveraged his IND trait into the Engineer Wonders (Pyramid, HG) and then used Police State to build up the game's first army, which marched off into BGN. He is currently in Golden Age and just discovered Theology (founding Christianity), so I am currently theorising he will pursue the Monk Economy in the near future. Not sure how his tech is set otherwise, since my Explorer left his borders a while ago with HAs running around. I /think/ he's just started putting up Courthouses though.

Tier 2:
The boundary between T2 & T2.5 is a bit wobblier than between T1 & T2 - hence T2.5 vs T3 - but hopefully I can justify it. AT & Dreylin have pursued a relatively similar game up to now; (mostly) non-aggressively secured our territory and focused on building upwards. Our scores are each bolstered by a couple of Wonders; he has GLH & Artemis, while I have the top tree trio of SoZ, GLib & Parthenon. He pushed out Courthouses aggressively and early, so has a significant lead in EP accumulation, but otherwise I think he's roughly on par with me tech-wise, although possibly in more military-applicable techs (I saw a Longbow of his 5-10t before we started our own). I think he has tech visibility on me at the moment.

Mr. Cairo built a huge army early - likely as a counterbalance to Gawdzak's build-up - but they started a 10t declare/peace NAP cycle and so he was free to pursue alternative routes of expansion. This came through the overseas assault on Adrien of which I was initially skeptical but has continued to grind the latter down into irrelevance. Quick early gains by naval assault (he has at least 8 Galleys that I have seen), but then progress slowed significantly as he faced internal cities. He hasn't taken an additional city in quite a few turns, though Adrien's recent whips may imply he's ready to proceed. Despite consuming a large chunk of Adrien, he still has few cities than I do and I believe he tech rate has suffered under the weight of his previously anomalously-large army. I got visibility on his Research last turn, which showed 1t to Feudalism; I also surpassed him in Soldier count. He does have Elephants though. rant

Tier 2.5:
Molach I know relatively little about, and might qualify for t2 once I take a more detailed look. I've exposed a large chunk of his territory, but I haven't really looked at it in any detail as he's far enough away and not standing out enough to warrant it. From what I can tell he's had a number of small skirmishes with on-continent neighbours AT & Ichabod, and IIRC a small fight with Yuri over an adjoining island. Tech-wise he is one of only 2(?) others who have adopted Bureaucracy (myself & Jowy, I believe are the only others) so isn't slouching there, but I don't recall his demos standing out at all.

Nyles & Yuri are firmly T2.5 because they're doing what Nyles & Yuri tend to do, namely skirmishing along borders but not making great gains. Yuri looked to be about to finish BRick off, but then Nyles jumped in against him and now that's off again. From something Nyles said in his PB34 thread, I think they've basically been at it all game and it seems to have been dragging both of them down. Again, not taken a detailed look tech-wise; just finished mapping most of Nyles' territory and have signed OB with Yuri to do the same there.

Food:
Jowy was trucking along steadily at the top of the pack but completely failed to react to Ichabod's MASSIVE Power build-up until it was very very too late and may now be the first to be eliminated.

BGN has been much more successful at slowing Gawdzak's advances, but has been overwhelmed by numbers. Still holding out against the invaders, but loses a city every few turns and it's only a matter of time before.

Adrien was unfortunate starting next to Jowy (again) and got bottled-up inside a much smaller area than the other players - although peacefully this time. Then amphibiously assaulted by Mr. Cairo and gradually eaten. Has held out without losing a city for a few turns now but I think Mr. Cairo has brought a final wave of troops over to finish him off.

BRick had an early run-in with BGN which set him back. Was left alone for a while when Gawdzak hit BGN, but then Yuri arrived to try to finish him off. That was then interrupted by Nyles, so I think BRick may well outlast each of the other "Food" tier players at the current rate!

Geopolitical, neighboury-type thinks.

I currently have 3 main neighbours; Mr. Cairo to the N & NW, Gawdzak to the SW, and AT to the East. Minor neighbours are BRick to the S and Adrien to the NE, who is my only land neighbour. I have mapped out the adjacent territory of each, with the exception of BRick which I didn't get around to before sniping his island city, which has given me a good view of how they are configured. I'll take pictures of these regions tonight, but until then you'll have to use your imagination / older views.

In no particular order:

AT: our Naval border is primarily focused on the island region, although he has 2 cities on the inland Sea offshore Troll (I can never remember what I actually named that cityDoh). We have visibility on each other's border cities - his on mainland, mine on island - and are roughly keeping even in units with a Longbow and ~3 others. He currently has control of the Peak tile that blocks off the South of the Inland Sea, so he can also see my Naval pump and knows I have Triremes in the area. CRE is helping me win the culture fight here, so I have decent warning of anything going on, but we've been peaceful for a long period and I expect us to remain that way - he has enough land neighbours to worry about. We have had limited trade in the past; he scored GLH so I didn't give him OB for a long time, then made him pay for a while until I wanted to map out his territory. Those have been canceled again.

Gawdzak: he controls the territory across the South-western channel, but only has one city actually on the coast in that region. Infact there is quite a lightly populated gap near his border with Mr. Cairo. The channel is narrow near his city and we can see each other's city tiles (CRE vs CRE here). He has another coastal city West of my latest island plant, but I'm keeping a decent garrison here to prevent temptation - and he's still dealing with BGN. I've explored a chunk of his land, but I rushed it a little to accelerate locating Yuri & Nyles (for KTB) and I need to get back and re-expose what he's captured from BGN. In return he's mapped out most of my coast with a WB.

We've had a decent relationship so far; he paid me for OB for quite a while and we are maintaining that. I have been somewhat propping up BGN with Furs and Stone, but drew the line at his Iron request last turn. It's probably time I drew that to an end to maintain goodwill over here.

Mr. Cairo: this is the tense border. smile He has one city immediately across the straight from my Moai and then his Capital to the NW. We had OB for a while, but when he used that to stage an attack on Adrien's Stone city I canceled and we have not renewed since. In the meantime I explored his territory completely and he looked at most of mine in return. I have my main fleet in this area (6Trireme & 3Galleys) and had been thinking to take advantage of his attack on Adrien to grab that city, but the opportunity did not arise. He may not realise it, but I have since unloaded the Galleys and they currently sit empty. He has at least 8 Galleys in the area acting as a supply chain to his colony; I have not seen any Triremes yet, but feel that he must have them, so am continuing to add to my own. Land defenses here are strong, though reinforcements are relatively few. I'm trying to de-escalte the situation and we recently agreed to trade my spare Gems for his (only?) Incense, so we'll see where things go from here.

Final border in the NE is the complicated one. I established a strong border city at Troll, and Adrien reached a bit to grab the area and form a buffer between me and Jowy and AT. It's a strong city and it's the one I've had my eye on, but it's also on flatland and a little too close to established borders for me to try to keep it, I think. When Iron popped up in the gap N of Troll, I decided to put a throw-away city there to grab that and the Clams. It's flatland, but has been left alone to develop nicely and for that reason I'd like to see if I can "adjust the border" somewhat.

I may have missed the window though, because beyond Adrien's city is Jowy ... or soon to be Ichabod and his Cataphract hordes. Ichabod and I have been remote up until now, but we've had a long-term Gem-Gold trade going and recently signed Open Borders, so I think we count as friends. I'm also the least-practical for him to extend and attack, so my feeling is that as long as I don't step on his toes we will remain that way.

My best route for expansion is probably the most problematic - to the South. BRick is irrelevant and Yuri & Nyles are holding each other back by taking chunks of each other. If I could assemble a force down here, I might be able to secure a decent slice of new territory. However that would take 1) a tech advantage & 2) a sizeable force, neither of which I have at this point. It's something I need to keep an eye on though, as I do need to find somewhere to expand my land area to stand a chance of keeping up with Ichabod & Gawdzak.

Vague planning-type things:

Short term: Research Engineering (3t), look spiky, don't get attacked by Ichabod (lesser, Mr. Cairo).
Bonus goal: grab some of Adrien's remaining territory.

Short/Medium-Term: After Engineering it's off to Banking; trigger 2-man GA and adopt Emancipation, tech to Nationalism (bulb Philo??) and adopt Mercantilism before end of GA.
Bonus goal: build Taj.

Medium-Term: build up troops (Knights/later??) and stage attack on someone. Options: Mr. Cairo, Brick/Yuri/Nyles mess.
Bonus Goal: boat someone's core as effectively as I did Wetbandit's.... mischief

EDIT: pictures added.

Hmmm, Ichabod just gained Paper:

I'm sure he'll have some interesting insights in his thread.

And I spotted this while reviewing the map and taking pictures:

Not sure if I can get anything over there (or even if circumnav is enabled to grab).

Current builds:

And Historic Builds:

Longbows up there already, but probably too few Workers (although 5 island cities, so getting towards the end of improving the current land).

Current Demographics (Gawdzak in GA):
