Okay, had long chats with lots of people. End summary we made an overture to the Incans. They make peace with Ruff, we let them in the tech alliance.
I'll handicap it at 50/50, but that might be optimistic. I got the impression they don't think their only option is to choke Ruff, so they must have something more coming. I also got the impression they were either already in the other alliance or at least had one foot in the door. So it would not be a simple matter of joining us, they'd have to find some way to say no to the other guys without leaving a lot of bad blood.

Definitely agree with this. It just makes everything fit. The stalling on emails / chat requests. The crazy logic. Everything.

The key to any early agreements in a tech trading game seems to be alphabet, and that is in fact our group's goal. Are we correct in assuming that Exploit is researching Alphabet for you? We weren't sure since he seems to be playing more of the "aloof trader" game.
Like we said, we understand if you feel the need to be coy or vague. While we prefer to be more of "straight shooters" (and hopefully you've seen that from our previous emails), we understand if you need to keep things close to the vest.

Portugal sent us a bunch of screenshots - darrell if you want to put them in thread feel free. Otherwise you can just look at them in the email box.
Some highlights:
Exploit has a copper at 16W 1N, compared to his capital at 12W 6N, so 4-5 tiles SW. There's a nice river and pig so it seems like that would be a good 3rd city, if/when he builds it. It seems odd that he'd have any copper any closer.
Portugal's 4th city is pretty close to HH, claiming that pig / corn - it's 4SW from the center of HH.
When we send them our screenshots, we should talk about how the border is going to form between our civs. Obviously we want to claim as much as we can get away with, without SEEMING like that's what we're doing. Remember too that Korea is to our south / their east

We should definitely hold off on sending that note to Rome until we hear from Inca.
The other thing I was going to add to Rome as a sweetener was the ability to bring someone else in with them, if they wanted. But with Inca on board too (making 9?) I'm not sure we want to go up to 11
