It's been a few months since we led the Lumbering Rocks to their slow-but-inexhorable victory, and with a new player or two arriving recently, I thought it would be a good time to start up a new SG! We could try an easier game if we get enough less-experienced players (or if vets want a chance to try out some crazy gambits and unlikely strategies) or just go full trial-by-fire and see how we do on Impossible with a mixed roster and a variant! What do you guys think?

I'm in favor! I don't have any gambits or variants in mind but I bet we could come up with something cool. Or just play. I can't wait!
If we want to make the game accessible for everyone we could play Psilons or Klackons on Impossible, or drop it to hard and play a weaker race. I wouldn't want to go lower than that for difficulty but let's see what the rest of our players want to do.
I'm interested, if you guys don't mind someone who will effectively raise the difficulty level by his <ahem> sub-optimal play.
Impossible Klackons on a large map is my default game setup, so that sounds good. I'd probably learn more by playing a different race, though.
Hi! One of the new players here! I think I'd rather play a stronger race on Impossible.
EDIT: Oh, and DaveV, I'll be raising the difficulty too. I don't know if that makes you more or less worried...
I would also be interested, if you don't mind a very rusty and none-too-skilled player. Not sure how many people you are planning for; if the roster is full I would be happy to lurk.
Oooh, cool! Let's do this! DaveV, if you can beat kyrub's AI on Impossible in a large galaxy, even with the Klackons, you're better at this than you think! (And even if you normally play the game without kyrub's patch, a win on Impossible is still a win!) Having players with varied skill levels could make this an opportunity to play something we rarely get to see around here - like the Psilons! Impossible Psilons on a medium map (with no variant except avoiding exploits) would give DaveV a chance to play with a non-insect race on a different galaxy size, still let the AIs stack up Impossible-level missile bases so their planets aren't too easy to crack, and be easier than a regular Impossible game thanks to all the Brains' advantages - including knowing we won't have to face AI Psilons! What do you guys think?
[EDIT: I got distracted by PB37 and lunch, and got ninja'd by like an hour! haphazard1, welcome aboard! And I'm with Ianus: The more the merrier! If we somehow get a dozen sign-ups or something, we can always split into two teams!]
Thanks for the welcome, Ianus and RefSteel.
![]() I have grabbed Kyrub's patch and am playing a game to shake off some rust and get familiar with changes. Hmmm, the Scout2/nuScout dance is no longer necessary -- nice. I will have to look through the other info, see what else is different. And I also need to figure out how to get screenshots working with this install. Hmmmm...DOS Box docs claim Cntl-F5, but then where do they end up? More checking needed, obviously. Ooooh, a terran 90 right by my home world.
haphazard: In my case, screenshots land in the subdirectory "capture" in the dosbox configuration directory. So, as per the dosbox wiki you might check...
...on Windows 7 or later: C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Local\DOSBox ...on Mac: ~/Library/Preferences/DOSBox 0.73 Preferences ...on Linux/*BSD: ~/.dosbox where "~" is your home directory. You can also set a custom directory for screenshots by editing the configuration file: Find the line that says captures=... and replace it with captures="<your screenshot directory>". As for finding the relevant configuration file: It's either in the directory where the game was installed (GOG version) or in the default configuration directory mentioned above. Of course, you could also just use some external program for making screenshots, but I don't know which ones are good. Regarding the game: Psilons sounds good to me!
Glory be! Impossible Psilons? At Realms Beyond?! I never thought I would see the day! Who wants to get things going? I can roll a map this evening, or should we settle on turn order first? As Ref stated do NOT expect a comparable pace to what we saw in that great PBEM game. A turn set every day or two is more normal, at least for me.
This is gonna be great! |
